Hi, I'm from Australia and am trying to establish family histories in Ireland. In particular I am seeking information about a Mary Jane Stoker who I believe was born in Dublin circa 1809 and married a Samuel Maddocks (a builder/cabinet maker also born in Dublin circa 1811) in Dublin about 1830. They emigrated to Hobart Australia as passengers out of Liverpool England on the "Wellington" around June-August 1832.
Any information would be gratefully received.

I'm not seeing anything likely in Dublin city parish records for the marriage - do you know what denomination your Stoker/Maddocks family were ?
The only Maddocks/Maddox entry included in the Merchant's and Traders section of Wilson's Dublin city directory of 1829 (part of the Treble Almanac) is a Thomas Maddox, Inspector of Shipping for Lloyd's and Patriotic Insurance Co. of Ireland
I've seen other topics on this couple posted online, presumably by other descendants, which mention a son named Orlando Jeremiah Maddocks, born Liverpool (Lancs. England) in 1832.

Thanks for your effort on this.
Don't know if this is likely to make any difference but I mistakenly typed Mary Stoker when in fact it was Margaret Jane Stoker. Also we have found Maddocks spelt in a variety of ways in Australian records ... Maddocks, Maddock, Maddox etc, which doesn't help.
The Orlando Jeremiah Maddocks (1832) is their eldest child, the other children born in Australia. We already have him in our records.
As far as denomination is concerned I cannot be precise other than to say that as their descendants in Australia were largely Protestant, it is likely they were also.....maybe Church of Ireland?Pablo

Most of surviving Church of Ireland parish records for Dublin city are on the IrishGenealogy website, but they have very few records for other Protestant denominations - Presbyterian, Methodist etc. I've seen some references to at least some of the Maddocks families in and around Dublin being Quaker which might explain the lack of findings on the usual sources, which usually focus on Catholic and Church of Ireland records.
If you think your Maddocks line may have been Quaker then the place to contact is the Society of Friends in Ireland - see : Quakers in Ireland (Irish Genealogy Toolkit)
and Religious Society of Friends in IrelandI had a quick search for Margaret in Dublin city instead of Mary to see if anything turns up for that name instead, and while there are numerous Stokers mentioned, including two going back to to the mid 1600s, I didn't see any Margaret Jane or Margaret in the early 1800s or late 1790s. Most of the Stoker baptisms showing up in the first decade of the 1800s in Dublin city appeared to be Catholic.
They only online result I found that's even close is a baptism of a Margaret Stokes, in St. Paul's Arran quay (Catholic) in 1798. The same couple have other children listed, so the surname doesn't seem to be a transcription error for Stoker.
Where did Margaret die ? do you have a death cert for her ?
If that cert includes father's name it might help locate him in other sources, such as directoriesShane Wilson, IrelandXO Volunteer ☘

Thanks for all this. I think another member of the family may have or be able to access Margaret's death record. From memory I thik she died in Melbourne,. I will check with them and then post the information. The Quaker angle might be worth exploring also.
Thanks again

As thought Margaret Jane Stoker died a widow in Melbourne on 6 July 1895 aged 89 years from Bronchitis and Heart Failure. Unfortunately the parents section is marked "details unknown" so no help. Also no clues as to denomination.
I will explore the "Quakers" clue you provided and see where that takes me
Thanks again

Hi Pablo,
I'm a Maddocks, originally from Australia, and a direct descendant of Samuel Maddocks and Mary Stoker. I'm working away from UK this week, but when I get home I'll dig out what info I have ... it includes information about their descendants in Australia (who include Len Maddocks - died only a few days ago, having ben the oldest living Australian Test cricketer, and his brother Dick, who played 1st class cricket for Victoria and football for North Melbourne).
I've read on a couple of ancesrty boards that Mary Jane Stoker may have been closely related to Bram Stoker (author of Dracula) but I've not found any compelling evidence to support this. Their first child (Orlando) was born in Liverpool before they sailed to Hobart.
Anyway - very best wishes, and I'll get you what information I have on the Australian descendants.

Hi Rob ........ Would love to touch base with you and compare notes.I agree with you re the Bram Stoker story. I have heard the rumours also but haven't found anything to substantiate it. Also aware of Orlando Jeremiah who arrived with his parents in Australia on the "Wellington" in August 1832. The name "Orlando" runs through the family. My grandfather was Donald Orlando. Other arms of the family also carry through the Orlando name. You can contact me by email via paul__barrett@hotmail.com. Hope to speak to you soon. Regards Paul (Pablo is a nick name)
