Looking to find anything on a Bridget Kiersnan / Kiernan born in Dublin (according to a passenger list) 1838.
Only thing I have on my Great Great Grand Mother was that was a Domestic Servant, left Ireland to travel to Liverpool, Lancashire, England. Sailed by ship called the Europa to Adelaide, South Australia arriving on the 12th May 1855. no other Kiersnan’s were aboard the ship.
She married a James Palmer Johnston in a country town outside Adelaide called Angaston on the 24th August 1856 and had four daughters. Ann Isabella, Mary Eliza, and twins girls Elizaberth and Mathilda.
Her husband died in 1914 and was buried in an unused grave owned by his eldest daughter and husband at the West Tce Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia.
The rest of her children were also buried at the West Tce Cemetery, but I can’t find any records on a Bridget Johnston.
My Great Grandmother was Elizabeth Johnston one of her twin daughters that later married a William Edgar and is subsequently buried as Elizabeth Edgar, she died in 1895 at the age of 33. There is a women buried before her with the registered name of Elizabeth Johnstone in 1878 at the age of 40. This plot was never purchased and several other non related people have been buried here
If this is Bridget why would she be buried as Elizabeth, on her marriage certificate her name is Bridget as well as her children’s birth certificates
Bridget could not read or write and only made a mark on her Marriage Certificate. I have seen the spelling of her name spelt several ways; I suppose it was written by the way she pronounced it.
I understand I am looking for a needle in a hay stack but any records on this women or where to look would be much appreciated
Thanks
Terry Edgar

Hi Terry,
There is a record of Bridget Kiernan born 1838 in Dublin on www.rootsireland.ie/ It is a pay site so will cost but will give you her parents' names and the parish.
If you get the parents' names you can check the Tithe Applotments which are free to search; it has 12 Kiernans in Dublin but there are no years next to all except 3 which are 1821 (2) & 1834.
You can search the Griffiths Valuation & 1901 & 1911 Irish Census freely also.

Terry,
"If this is Bridget why would she be buried as Elizabeth, on her marriage certificate her name is Bridget as well as her children’s birth certificates?"
Not all that uncommon....I have a similar case where a particular family "claimed" one of my relatives and they were buried under another Surname. Of course, people can and do change their names by deed pole or for any number of other reasons.
Good luck with your search, Mick NSW
