  • I'm not an expert on the parishes along the Tipperary/Waterford border. Hopefully, someone locally based will comment.Based on this link, it would appear that the church is currently in Tipperary. http://www.waterfordlismore.com/parish-details/?parishID=38
I also looked at the 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Newmarket parish and located three Thomas McGrath records as shown below. The townland name is at the right.

  • Hi Jeanne,

Newcastle is a small but thriving picturesque village in Co. tipperary but on the border of Co. Waterford.  Just a few miles away is the townsland of Fourmilewater in Co. Waterford.  Both parishes are in the Dioscese of Waterford Lismore.

Over many years parish boundaries have expanded and contracted so I don't know which church your people were baptised in.  I believe it may have been Newcastle as I think the church at Fourmilewater was built in 1828, But whether it was built on the site of an older church I don't know.

You will find that your ancestors came really from just the one area as there are only a few miles (about 3 or 4) between these places.  It is prime, rich farmland and very scenic.

    Hope this help a little,

    Regards,

    Anne Dennehy

  • Thank you, Roger! Hopefully as I learn more about my Thomas McGrath, it will become evident which one of these he may have been.  I have a lot of learning to do about research in Ireland!  :)

  • Thank you, Anne! That does help! I'm going to do some more searching and try to get my bearings.  I'm new to researching in Ireland and have a lot to learn.  Can't wait to come visit the area, but I want to learn as much as I can before I get there!
