I've found the following info about my ancestors Thomas McGrath and Bridget Quinn, who married in 1823 at Newcastle and Fourmilewater. They and at least some of their children went to Chicago, Illinois, USA around 1860. Would greatly appreciate any guidance in findng more about this family and the area they were from. The marriage and baptism records were found on the RootsIreland site. I am a little confused about the locations of these areas.

There is another daughter, Ellen McGrath born c1840, for whom I did not find a baptism. She went to Chicago and married Edmond Norris, a native of County Tipperary and brother of the John Norris who married her sister Bridget. Also a daughter Margaret McGrath, also born c1840, who went to Chicago and became a nun, Sister Mary Modesta, at St. Mary's Convent in Notre Dame, Indiana.

I'm not an expert on the parishes along the Tipperary/Waterford border. Hopefully, someone locally based will comment.Based on this link, it would appear that the church is currently in Tipperary. http://www.waterfordlismore.com/parish-details/?parishID=38
I also looked at the 1850 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Newmarket parish and located three Thomas McGrath records as shown below. The townland name is at the right.

Hi Jeanne,
Newcastle is a small but thriving picturesque village in Co. tipperary but on the border of Co. Waterford. Just a few miles away is the townsland of Fourmilewater in Co. Waterford. Both parishes are in the Dioscese of Waterford Lismore.
Over many years parish boundaries have expanded and contracted so I don't know which church your people were baptised in. I believe it may have been Newcastle as I think the church at Fourmilewater was built in 1828, But whether it was built on the site of an older church I don't know.
You will find that your ancestors came really from just the one area as there are only a few miles (about 3 or 4) between these places. It is prime, rich farmland and very scenic.
Hope this help a little,
Regards,
Anne Dennehy

Thank you, Roger! Hopefully as I learn more about my Thomas McGrath, it will become evident which one of these he may have been. I have a lot of learning to do about research in Ireland! :)

Thank you, Anne! That does help! I'm going to do some more searching and try to get my bearings. I'm new to researching in Ireland and have a lot to learn. Can't wait to come visit the area, but I want to learn as much as I can before I get there!
