Stephen Tobin was born in or near Newcastle in December 1824 to parents John Tobin and Elizabeth/Ellen O'Brien. Stephen had siblings Mary, Catherine, Ellen, John and William. John Tobin (Snr)  died in Dublin in 1837 aged 37, buried Glasnevin Cemetery. Stephen married Mary Driscoll in 1857 at Clonmell and emigrated to New South Wales, Australia that same year. BDM records in Australia suggest Mary was born 1839/40 at Clogheen to parents Timothy Driscoll and Mary Whitehead, but a baptismal record of a Mary Driscoll, parents Timothy Drsicoll and Mary White  dated 18 May 1835 at Parish of Ballyporeen, address named as 'Araglin' which is on the Cork side of the border with Tipperary and Waterford.

Stephen was well educated and politically active as a pioneer of the small settlement of Tallebudgera, part of the Gold Coast of Queensland during the period 1870-1893, Author Robert Lonhurst described Stephen Tobin as "especially literate and forthright man who figured as a prominent community leader". He also described him as a "determined lobbyist, an articulate man who obviously had previous experience rattling the bones of government. Tobin early on assumed a commanding role."

Stephen and Mary Tobin had 11 children in Australia. Stephen died 1904 and Mary in 1913.

I am looking for any Tobins or O'Briens living in this area who may be related to this line.

  • greetings from Illinois, USA; I did some family research regarding Tobins from the Ardfinnan/ Newcastle area for time period 1810 up through about 1860. I have information regarding Ballybacon parish Tobins particularly. Ballybacon is part of Ardfinnan sort of like a diocese I guess. Ballybacon is very close to Newcastle and not far from Ballyporeen. I had the pleasure of a cold beverage in Newcastle some years ago after some sightseeing at old churches and cemeteries. Back then I paid a service to check old parish records but now it looks like those records are all searchable online at the Irish National Library. I do have Tobin info from doing my own initial searches. I gathered info on a lot of Tobins who were not direct relatives. If you have any interest in anything i'll be happy to send it your way. My great X 3 grandfather was a John Tobin born there in 1810 and his wife born there 1818 was a Carrigan and that couple was related in some way to Prendergast, Nugent . I see your inquiry is two years now and hope you have had success.    cheers    Jeff Tobin
