My ancestor, Patrick Murphy, came from Sluggara, in the civil parish of Whitechurch, near Blarney. He was born in 1817 there and emigrated to Boston in 1841.
I know that Patrick's parents were Patrick and Winifred Murphy. I'd love to find out more about these Murphys. Are there any descendants of Patrick and Wififred still there. We're going to be visiting Whitechurch.
Thanks!

Hi Clare
There are 2 listings of Murphy in the Irish phone book for Whitechurch:
Andrew Murphy Monard Whitechurch
Murphy Pump Services Ltd 1 The Gn Whitechurch
You might want to have a look at the Tithe Applotments 1823-37 which are free online
www.titheapplotments.nationalarchives.ie
There are quite a few Patrick Murphys in Cork
You could also try www.irishgenealogy.ie/ which has a lot of Cork records
The 1901 census (free online) has 83 Murphys in Whitechurch & the 1911 has 113
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/
Griffiths Valuation 1848-64 (free) has 25 Murrphies in Whitechurch www.askaboutireland.ie/

Thanks for the information Col! This is most helpful.
I think I might have found my ancestor, Patrick Murphy, in the Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-37 in Ballinvarrig, on the same page as Sluggary! I'm now looking at maps on Origins to find out if Ballinvarig is close to Sluggary.
I will follow up on your other suggestions next.
I'm looking forward to visiting Whitechurch in person in a few weeks. Perhaps I'll see some distant relatives. I'm bringing a photo of Patrick.

Ballinvarrig townland is to the east of Farranastig townland here - parts of it have a border with Farranastig.

I was replying to you other post when I saw this one... the location known as 'Sluggary' is in Farranastig townland in Whitechurch civil parish, and right beside border with Garrycloyne civil parish.
see here (1st Edition OSI Map, c1837)
I suspect the baptism for Patrick jnr. was probably in the gap in registers for Whitechurch / Blarney / Garrycloyne mentioned on the NLI Index - also John Grenham's website and Ryan's Irish Records All three mention missing dates between 1792 and 1821.
