My ancestor, Patrick Murphy, came from Sluggara, in the civil parish of Whitechurch, near Blarney.  He was born in 1817 there and emigrated to Boston in 1841.

I know that Patrick's parents were Patrick and Winifred Murphy.  I'd love to find out more about these Murphys.  Are there any descendants of Patrick and Wimifred still there.  We're going to be visiting Whitechurch.

Thanks!

  • Hello Claire ref your post. You will have to rely on Baptism records as Civil Registration wasnt introduced in Ireland until 1864
I have had a look on www.rootsireland.ie a Pay to view site in the Roman Catholic parish of Blarney but cannot see a marriage for the parents or baptism for Patrick in the time frame you give.
There is a record for a Patrick Murphy in Griffiths Valuation viewable at www.nationalarchives.ie but while it is in Whitechurch the townland is Rathpeacon.
Cant see any record on the Tithe Applotment records for Patrick.
Should I discover any relevant records will let you know. Do you know Winifreds Surname? Regards Frances

  • Many thanks for your suggestions Frances.

I have checked for Baptism records for Patrick with no success. Thank you for looking.

I don't know Winifred's surname. I found that name in the death record for Patrick and Winifred's son Patrick who died in Boston, Massachusetts in 1889. I don't know who provided this information but it certainly wasn't the younger Patrick.

That's interesting that you found a Patrick Murphy in Whitechurch in Griffith's Valuation since I did not. I was looking on Origins for the records though.

I'll have to locate that and find out where Rathpeachon is relative to Ballinvarrig, where I found a Patrick Murphy listed in the Tithe Applotment books in 1826, and Sluggary which the younger Patrick lists as his birthplace in his naturalization application in 1854.

    Regards, Claire
