Hi, I have been researching my family tree and recently learnt that my 3rd great grandmother (Annie) was born in Tipperary. She was born in 1827 to Parents Allen Giles and Mary (maiden name given as Nicholson though I'm not sure this is correct). I don't know why Annie left Ireland but she appears to have done so without her parents. She landed in Brisbane Australia with Luke Abraham, also from Tipperary in 1852. They were married in Australia before moving to New Zealand in 1858 where they spent the rest of their lives. Luke Abraham parents are not confirmed, but one source says they are John Abraham Hart and Sarah Hutchinson. Luke was born approximately 1822 with his death certificate listing Tipperary as his place of birth also. I am keen to learn anything about my ancestors, where they lived and what life was like. The Griffith valuation search gives me Corbally as Allen's parish. Apart from that I know nothing more.

Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!
You don't mention the religious denomination for the Giles family. If they were RC records for the parish start in 1836 too late for Annie. The 1850 griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Corbally parish shows Allen Giles living in Derrymore townland. See link below. There were no Abraham records but there was a Sarah Alrahan.

Thanks Roger!
Immigration records show the religion as Church of England. Would this effect the amount of information available? I know very little about Irish history and culture I'm afraid.
Sarah Alrahan may be correct! I can find no records of Luke using the name Hart. It would be nice to know that Annie and Luke were from the same county. They arrived in Australia on different ships.
Thanks

I checked my reference book and C of I records for Corbally start in 1834 so too late for Annie. They are available on Roots Ireland which is a subscription site. I have access. Did Annie have younger siblings?
Many of the Church of Ireland records were destroyed in the 1922 fire at the Four Courts Building. Local church in some situations like Corbally retained copies.

Hi Roger, I can find no information about Annie at all prior to her immigrating. I have no idea about any family members. I would love to know more, if you are able to help I would be most grateful! Now I know of the connection, its a dream of mine to one day travel to her ancestral home. Given that Luke was supposedly from the area too, it would be magical to see where it all began.
She settled in the South Island of NZ which is where she stayed until she passed away at the age of 100. She raised all her children there. My Grandfather grew up there too, he was 15 when she passed away. He moved to Auckland in the North Island and settled there after WW2. With the considerable distance and lack of ease of communication my father was brought up with little knowledge of the family, only vague recollections of names.I was only 15 when my grandfather passed so was too young to consider family outside of the cousins I knew. Regrettably my father lost contact with the Family in NZ so I have no information about the family at all. Only what I have managed to piece together using sights such as ancestry.com. I have no oral history of the family unfortunately so have no stories relating to why she came here, or what her family where like. I was only able to establish what I have about our connection to Ireland from her immigration records and a feature about her in a history books about Kaikoura, where she settled in New Zealand, and a book on Pioneer woman in NZ.
I have attached the passenger list from her ship to Australia. I cant read what is in the column before the 'native place'. If you have any idea what that might mean I would be keen to hear.
Thanks

I can't read the heading either but it has to be something related to Occupation and Ann was a domestic servant in Tipperary.
Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

Hi Roger, my brother and I were actually discussing that this morning. It might be something to look at. Are you familiar with any good companies that offer this? I only know on ancestry.com.
I have managed to locate a potential death year for Allen and just discovered this post in a Google search. Is there any way of verifying marriages and deaths with the records that are currently in existence? Would be particularly keen to know if there is a known grave.
The post was asking about connections to these Giles.
Allen Giles (d. 1862 ) Possibly three marriages including to
Mary Nicholson
- Susan Giles (1819-1890) & Charles Willoughby (1818-1883) -
lived in Australia
- William Giles (1824-1864) & Judy Maher
- Anne Giles (1827-1927) & Luke Abraham - lived in New
ZealandKind regards

I have tested with Ancestry and Family Tree DNA and prefer Family Tree because they provide more analytical tools.
Civil registration of deaths started in 1864. Can't help with a possible grave but it is a long time ago and any headstone erected would not be in very good shape. I will send an e-mail to someone in another parish to see if they can help out.
I located the baptismal record shown below on Roots Ireland.
