Maureen:
I found an 1894 civil birth index record for a Caroline Elizabeth Whiteside in Belfast. ( There were only 2 Caroline Whiteside birth records for all of Ireland). You can write to the GRO for a copy of the record which will show the names of her parents and where they lived. Follow these instructions:
Go to this link http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx In the middle of the page there are links for birth, marriage or death certificates. Hit the link for the form you want. You will likely get a screen asking for a User Name and Password. (This is a program bug that the GRO has to correct). Hit cancel and the appropriate form should come up. Print the form and complete the requested information. Also provide the information from the index record--quarter/year of the event. registration district and the volume and page number where the event is recorded. Make sure you ask for a copy which costs around 4 euros. ( A cert costs closer to 20 euros). You can also ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

Maureen,
This looks to be Caroline in 1901 with her parents.
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Cromac/Prospect_Street/970904/
Benjamin appears to have died in Belfast in Apr-Jun 1903. Suspect therefore that she was an orphan by 1911, and consequently staying with her next of kin.
Benjamin Foster Whiteside married Emily Elizabeth Goldie or Goldea Jul 0 Sept 1892 Belfast vol 1, page 267.
You would be able to get details of Benjamin?s career in the RIC from the PSNI museum:

Hi Elwyn
I think it is the "other" Caroline Whiteside I am looking for, born c1895, Belfast, Co Down. 1901 census living with Arnott family in Roundhill Street, Pottinger. In 1911, she appears with the Shaw family. She is buried along with my my 1st cousin x 1 removed, Jane Winifred Shaw, in Roselawn Cemetery, Belfast, in 1977. Caroline Elizabeth Whiteside born in 1894 is buried along with her father, Benjamin Whiteside. Very confusing have two with almost the same dates of birth. Would be grateful for your thoughts on that. Thanks again.

Thank you, Roger
I will do as you suggest. Very confusing have two Caroline Whitesides - I first went with the Caroline whose father was Benjamin, but that is the wrong one. My Caroline was living with a family by the Arnott in 1901 census and then with John Shaw (my great uncle) and his family in 1911. She is buried along with my 1st cousin x 1 removed, Jane Winifred Shaw, in Roselawn Cemetery, Belfast. She died on 2 February 1977 aged 82.
Thank you once again for your kind assistance.

Maureen:
I think Elwyn and I have come up with the same person (daughter of Benjamin) based on the 1894 birth record and age 6 in the 1901 census.
I did see the other 1901 census record with the Caroline with the Arnott family which indicates a Co. Down birth. There were no other civil births in the 1890s for a Caroline Whiteside or someone with Caroline as the middle name.

Hi Roger
Yes, I did exactly the same to begin with and eventually realised I had the wrong family - very frustrating!! I have been looking to see where the connection is with the Shaw family. My great Uncloe Lindsay (John) Shaw who married Annie Magee, states in the 1911 census that Caroline is his "niece". So, I have been trying to find out info to support that, but really struggling. I have found a marrage for Magee to Whiteside in 1859 and trying to work forward, but doubt I am on the right track.
Thanks again for your help.

Maureen:
I found an 1875 civil marriage index record for a marriage between Robert Whiteside and Sophia Shaw. It was registered in the Lisburn registration district which covers part of Co. Antrim and part of Co. Down to the southwest of Belfast. Thought I would pass it on in case there is a connection.
