  • The tithe applotment records for 1834 list 3 Scarlett farms in Lislarris. William senior, William junior and John:

    http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/fermanagh/tithe-applotment-books/parish-of-galloon.php#.WyoF5BR9eg0

Lislarris and some adjacent townlands were sold by order of the Encumbered Estates Court in 1858. (This dealt with selling off the assets of landlords who were effectively bankrupt). There is a copy of the sale brochure in PRONI under ref D1201/32:

14 January 1858 Irish Encumbered Estates Court Rentals. Rental and particulars of the estate of the said parties. Maps of the estate,

    surveyed by John Irwine, Whitty.

Parties: Estate of Alexander Nixon, owner, William Auchinleck Dane, Esq., petitioner. Relates to Cleenish Island, Killywillim, Tonyloman, Gordonaghy [sic], Mullyardlougher, Bonahesky [sic], Ringvilla, Kilroot, Lislarris, Lisnashillida, Drumclay, Aughgea [sic], and tenements in Newtownbutler, Co. Fermanagh.

Griffiths Valuation for 1862 lists 2 Scarlett households. Plot 2a was John Scarlett senior with 42 acres. He had sublet a labourer’s cottage (plot 2d) to John Scarlett junior (who would normally be his son).

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch

There’s no mention of either of the 2 Williams in Griffiths so either they had died or moved away by 1862.

You can follow through and see when those properties changed occupant using the Valuation Revision books on the PRONI website. That’s often a clue as to when someone died.  https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/proni

Probate abstracts from the PRONI wills site:

Administration (with the Will) of the personal estate of William Scarlett late of Lislanis County Fermanagh Farmer who died 27 June 1899 granted at Armagh to John Scarlett of Lislanis Farmer a Brother.

The above will is on-line on the PRONI website. It mentions 3 nieces and 1 nephew. William was a bachelor aged 63 according to his death certificate.

Probate of the Will of John Scarlett late of Lislaris County Fermanagh Farmer who died 1 December 1921 granted at Londonderry to William Scarlett Farmer Effects £362 13s. 10d.

Scarlett William of Lislaris Newtownbutler county Fermanagh retired farmer died 3 August 1956 at the Erne Hospital Enniskillen county Fermanagh Probate Belfast 16 January to George Trotter farmer. Effects £2977 2s. 9d.

The above 2 wills  are not on-line but should be held in PRONI in paper format.

    Family farm in 1901:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Fermanagh/Mullynagowan/Lislarris/513207/

Note that according to the 1911 census John had 9 children of whom 6 were still alive.

William, John, Florence & Lizzie all signed the Ulster Covenant in 1912, so that tells you their views on Home Rule. You can see their signatures on the Covenant site: https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/services/search-ulster-covenant

William, who married Bessie Keary, in the 1901 census:

    And in 1911:

The family appears to have been Church of Ireland. Galloon Church of Ireland records start in 1798 and cover baptisms, marriages and burials. If you have not already studied them, you may get more information on the family from that source. There’s a copy in PRONI.

There is a book on the history of Galloon parish, but for the life of me I can’t remember it’s exact name and author. It’s something like “Meeting at something Cross.” It goes into great detail about some of the families in the area. You might want to search for that. Enniskillen library probably has a copy.

  • Thank you so much Elwyn  from far away in austrlia I thank you  so very much  for your very quick reply.

Two Scarlett family Genealogists  Duncan Scarlett   from County Cavan and Helen Gresner nee Scarlett from New York have been researching their family history for over 3 years  and published  their findings .I believe Duncan  ( a cousin I didn't know I had until I came across The Scarlett Letter on line  one day that duncan had been editing for so long . He and Helen gave me all the above information that I put on  my message board after I contacted them  .They were so very generous to me.  Duncans family I am told Are related to my line  but not  Helen's .For  my family tree   I have their birthdates from Duncan  but some of your information on dates does  not match up with the dates I have  ... I myself looking at records have mixed up the three family lines especially the ones from around lislaris ? It is a quandry   indeed  . i can confirm  i think however that it was my great grandfather william died in 1956 at erne hospital .. onward  delving more thankyou so  very much fro theProni sites ...

One of williams children Isabella  who was born in 1875 went to America in 1921  I wonder ...with husband to live with children? Duncan told me 15 years ago a scarlett came from America looking for our family but he couldn't remember his name ...shame ..but he said some of my Scarleet family are living around the Belfast area today ..my generation of cousins ..I'm 76 years old  ..how could I find this infromation ..an on line phone book perhaps ?  anyway   ta again you are very kind  helping me  Kind regards Maureen

  • Isabella Scarlett was born 19 Nov 1875 in Clones:

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1875/03078/2128414.pdf

    Her mother was Elizabeth Keary.

Isabella married James Macdonald in Belfast on 30.11.1912:

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1912/09927/5608909.pdf

I searched for children to that marriage, born in Belfast 1912 -1918 but did not see any. (Births after 1918 are not available on-line).  I also looked for Isabella & James in the 1930 US census but couldn’t find them there either.

The UK phone book is available on this site. I had a quick look but couldn’t see any Scarletts listed in Belfast but there are some around the province:

  • thankyou Elwyn  for the above information   and    record sites .

Can you tell me about Lislaris  was it like a little village  ..how many people lived in that area   around 1878  what would the living arrangements be like  what was life like in those days  at all ? Thankyou once again Maureen

  • It’s 57 acres of largely agricultural land. It’s not a village, it’s just agricultural land and the townland name is the address for mail etc. In the 1901 census Lislaris had a total of 14 people living in 3 houses. 2 small farms and a family of agricultural workers. See:

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Fermanagh/Mullynagown/Lislarus/

The majority of the population in the wider general area around Lislaris in 1901 were either farmers, farm labourers or lace makers.
