Church marriage records show that my great grand father James Doonan married Rose Reilly on 19/10/1879. His father is shown as Stephen Doonan and his mother is Anne McCusker all of Cloncalick. The bride's father is Thomas Reilly (sic ) and her mother as Ellen McEntee all of Farmhill. The witnesses are Felix Curran of Fastry and Bridget McEntee of Annies. The Priest is named as Father Patrick Donnely (sic). I have been unable to trace any further information concerning my great great grand parents Stephen and his wife Anne. Similarly my great grand father James returned to Clones sometime after 1911 from Scotand and died in Ireland but I can find no further information concerning him. Any and all information concerning any of the parties to the marriage would be much appreciated.

  • Stephen:

I checked the 1862 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Drummully civil parish and the only Doonan entry was a Bernard in Cloncorick. There was a Thomas Reilly in Cloncallick.

I looked for possible civil death index records for James Doonan and the best possible record was a 1919 death. (There was a 1910 death but you indicated that he died after 1911). In any event, do you have an idea when he was born? Did he marry late? The 1834 year of birth on the death index record was provided by the informant and he/she may not have know when this James was born.

There were at least four Anne Doonan civil death index records from 1864-1900. I did not locate a Stephen Doonan civil death index record.

  • Roger,

First, thank you for taking the time to assist me in my research. James was born circa 1858 and Rose was born circa 1863. My late father who was born in 1918 told me he visited with James often as a child at a place named Clonfad Clones. Rose, I believe also had a brother Michael Riley(sic) born circa 1866.     Stephen just seems to fade from history much to my frustration.

  • TDoonan would be a very unusual name in Laois (Queens County), but there is a headstone in

Rathdaire COI cemetery, Ballybrittas, recent years, but, as I say, not a local name.

  • Hi, Louise it is great to hear from you but I am a little confused by your information. Let me explain. As a child along with my parents we emigrated to Australia and lived at first with Philip and Meg Doonan, my fathers uncle, in Collinsville. They had several sons, namely Johnny who died as the result of a sporting injury medical operation that went wrong. They also had sons named Philip, Brian and Kevin. We later retuned to live in Scotland.

Philip ( senior ) was my grandfather Stephen's brother and they along with other male and female siblings were children of James and Rose my great grandfather and  great grand mother. Perhaps you will be kind enough to let me know if you have information on the others named here and if they are related to you. I may take until after 15th Feb to get back to you as I may be of line as I am changing Broadband Provider. I have more information about James and Roses children and have visited Clones and Monaghan and Fermanagh often but many of the old records have been destroyed by the civil authorities and church records are often the only resource.

Hi Stephen  it can be a bit confusing as my fathers name was also Philip.  Kevin and Brian are my uncles and there is also another brother Stuart.   Philip and Meg are my grandparents who lived in Collinsville.  Unfortunately my father died in 2014 and John when 25 years old being operated on following having is nose broken playing football and there was also an aunt Margaret that died a few years ago.   I am still in contact with Kevin, Brian and Stuart.

I recall my father speaking about a relative that came to Australia but went back.   Hope that helps.  Louise

    Good morning Louise,

I have the picture now. We have the same great great grandparents namely James and Rose. I saw your late fathers obituary on line but there were no further contact details, so my researches were limited with regards to further family members, although I did find a photo of Kevin and other Doonans on a collinsville web site but alas no contact details. James and Rose came to Scoland in the late 1800's and settled in Alexandria a town in Dunbartonshire where they raised their family. I have details of them but at the moment I am doing my grandfatherly duty baby sitting my grand daughter and don't have my notes with me. I don't have Internet access at home at the moment as I am changing provider so have to rely on using my children's access at their homes. There is also a limit on the amount of text on this great web site you are able to send, plus it is a public forum and some of the information I have is sensitive and I dont think it is appropriate to put it out in public. I am sure we can resolve the problem.

Are there any specific questions and information I can help you with at present. I will be here in Prestwick on the Clyde coast at my daughters home for the rest of the day. We in Scotland are waiting for an overnight storm to abate. Hope you and yours are all well .

    Your far distant relation

    Stephen

  • 'Hi Louise,

The date and place of the death of James and Rose are proving difficult to determine. I believe Rose died in Scotland but the records for the relevant period are not on line. James returned to Clones sometime after 1918 and lived at CLONFAD, my father who was born in 1918 visited with him often as a child but I don't have his date of death. As Ireland was partitioned searches in the records in Dublin and in the Northern Ireland record office may prove fruitful. I don't know the date or place of Rose's death but presume it was in Scotland as my father never mentioned her in any context, so I presume he never knew her. A check in the Scottish records may again prove fruitful, so I will try there for you in due course. In my last message I described James and Rose as my "great great grandparents" in error. They were of course my "great grand parents". I am not on Facebook but in the meantime you can use email address peedoonan@talktalk.net for any sensitive information.

  • I tried to email you at the address you listed but it did not work. I received the following message " unknown address error " no doubt I am doing something wrong as I don't email much. Is the first letter of the address a Capital i or a Capital l . Perhaps if you send me a short email my system will record your email address and solve any connection problems.
