I am looking for information about the family of Isabella Nethercott, who married my great-grandfather, William James Hicks in 1910.  This Nethercott family was from Lisbellaw.  I believe Isabella's parents were Robert Nethercott and Isabella Farrell.  They had children Alfred, Elizabeth Jane, Adelaide, Eliza? and Isabella.  I do not have certificates, but I believe Robert and Isabella were married around 1883-84, as I have a Civil Registration date for them of Apr-May-Jun 1884, Enniskillen, Vol. 2, pg. 49, FHL film # 101254.  Some of their children emigrated to Ontario, Canada, and settled in the Whitby & Oshawa areas.  Can anyone help?  Thank you so much.

Since you have the registration information for the marriage, you can get a copy of the marriage record from GRONI  https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/  for around 2 pounds. The record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living in 1884. I located a 1901 census record for Robert and apparently Isabella died before 1901 and he remarried (assuming I have the correct record).

Looks like Isabella died in 1896.

  • Hello Roger,

Thank you for the link to GRONI--I ordered the marriage certificate (16 pounds, though) and can't wait for it to arrive so I will have some definite information.

I have seen that 1901 census and wondered if that was my Robert Nethercott, too. I will have to see about getting her death certificate next, to verify this piece of the puzzle.

I have no parents at all for William James Hicks, so I suppose that will be the next marriage certificate I will need to order.  One at a time, at this price! (I have the registration infor for that, too)

I do wish I could come visit and spend some time delving into this family and the area.

    Best regards,

    Laurel

I'm not an expert on GRONI. I usually order my records from the General Registration Office which covers all records from 1864-1922 for all of Ireland and only for the Republic from 1922 on. GRO charges 4 euros for a copy and 20 euros for a certificate. Looks like GRONI charges 2 pounds for a copy and 16 pounds for a certificate. I hope you really wanted the cert.

  • Laurel,

Roger is correct. If you order a formal copy of a certificate from GRONI it costs £16 and takes a couple of weeks to arrive. But your other option is to view it on-line. That only costs £2 and you can view it immediately. (Use the search certificates option, not the order one).

  • Hi Colleen,

Would you happen to know anything about Isabella (Farrell) Nethercott's siblings? I'm researching the family of my great-grandfather, William Farrell,  born abt 1859. His father was John Farrell and his family lived iin Inishmore, Fermanagh. William may have had a brother Robert and I would like to find out if there were any other siblings. I see from Isabella's marriage record to Robt. Nethercott that her father is listed as John, but not sure if this is the same as mine.

Would appreciate any information you have!

  • Hi Diane

Isabella's Nethercott Hick's parents were Robert Nethercott and Isabella Farrell.  I dont have their birth dates, but he was an army pensioner.  And she was a widow when she married him and had been previously married to a Bowles.  Her occupation is a ladies' nurse tender.  His father's name, John Nethercott, and her father's name, John Farrell.  They were married May 29, 1884, and their son Alfred was born 29 Dec 1884.

Do you think your William Farrell and John are brothers?

    So interesting!

  • Hi Colleen,

I think my William and your Isabella may be siblings, but have been unable to prove. Do you happen to know the names of any of her brothers or sisters?
