Do you have any other information on John's family that you could share? Information such as the names of his parents or any siblings that he may have had that remained in Ireland would greatly help. The more information you post, the greater the chances of someone being able to help.

One of the main places to search for information are church records. Unfortunately, alot of these records were destroyed in a fire in the Public Records Office in 1922, however some are still held locally. Also, it is importatnt to remember when searching for documents before 1800, the reality is that they simply may not exist. Hopefully you will be lucky and will be able to find some information on the McHughs.

Most Catholic records are held locally. However, one website which may help you is the irishtimes website where you can see an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Enniskillen follow this link:

Also, it is important to note that at the turn of the 18th century the Church of Ireland was the official church in the country. As a result the bulk of information that survives from this period is in the Church of Ireland registers. So if you are looking for record of John's parents or any siblings born around the same time you wil probably find them in these registers.

Another website which may help is www.irishgenealogy.ie/index.html where you can do an online search of some of the records.

You could also check the land records pertaining to Ireland in the 19th century for some record of the family. There are two:

John McHugh was born 9 Mar 1800 in Enniskillen.  He died at Meadows in SA on 10 April 1870.  He, Sarah his wife, two children - James and JAne came to SA with his two nieces Mary-Anne b c1821 and Margaret b c1819.  The two girls were orphans.  Upon arrival in SA they immediately were married being the 19th and 20th marriages performed in SA without the needed consent of the Governor.   They were married in Trinity Chruch SA.                                           I have been unable to trace anything about them, but recently came across a Terrence McHugh was in the army around about the time the girls would have been born, so am hoping this Terrence was their father.Jenni
