My ancesters were Thomas and Mary Quinton born approx. 1785. They had a son Robert born 1810 who was a painter. He married Anne (Nancy) Spencer in Manchester in 1837. They then emmigrated to Australia in 1840.
Any information and/or assistance would be appreciated.

Hi Graham,
Thanks for your message.
Unfortunately it may be difficult to go back further than Thomas and Mary as the reality of finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they simply may not exist. Catholic records for the area do not begin until c. 1838
Church of Ireland sometimes tend to have earlier start dates as it was the official church of the country at the time so you may be lucky here. Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.
Going forward, you could use Griffith?s Valuation to see if his parents or other possible family members were still in the area at the time:

Civil registration began in Ireland in 1864, so if Thomas and Mary died after this year you should be able to find record of it in civil records. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

You can search the indexes to these records online at:

You could use the 1901/1911 census records to see if there were any Quinton?s recorded as living there at the time:

Some other websites that you may find useful are:
The National Archives of Ireland http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/
The National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx
The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/
The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

I hope that some of this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
