I'm seeking help finding any history for Patrick Duggan, born around 1812 in Fermanagh, Enniskillen area possibly Letterbreen.  Parents, siblings, marriage, emigration date and locale - anything would be greatly appreciated.

  • hi,

I need more information about your ancestor as  there are no official records before 1864 if he was a Catholic, and nothing before late 1850s in he was some other denomination.

There are some Church records but not all Parishes, if any, go back to 1812.

Did he emigrate, if so when and where to ??

There is a Patrick DUGGAN that emigrated to the US in 1834, but I don't know if it is the right guy...

    Name:Patrick Duggan
    Event Type:Immigration
    Event Date:1834
    Event Place:United States
    Gender:MaleAge:22
    Birthplace:Irish
    Ship Name:Sarah Ann
    Birth Year (Estimated):1812

Did he marry, if so when and to who ??

A marriage cert. should show the name of his Father.

I don't find any DUGGANs in the Tithe Applotment records of 1825-1835.

    http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nirfer/1825-1835_tithe_applotment4.htm

There were only 3 or 4 DUGGANs in Fermanagh in 1858-1860 when Griffiths Valuation was carried out.

They farmed in the Townlands of Carrowkeel, Doon, Drummack, Mullynascarty.

There were not many DUGGANs around in the 1901 Census, but none from Letterbreen.

  • Dear Sean -

Thank you so much for responding to my query about Patrick Duggan.  I am struggling to learn how to use this website but think I can manage to answer a few of your questions:  It is thought, but not documented, that our ancestor was the son of Andrew Duggan and Ann Green Duggan, that he was born circa 1816 in or near Enniskillen, Fermanagh, Ireland.  About 1832, he married Susan (or Suzanne) Fawcett (or Facette). With their infant son Patrick, Jr., they emigrated, eventually ending up in Canada, but I'm guessing it is possible that they stopped in the US before reaching Canada.  There is some confusion about the emigration date: some family members/researchers think it was around 1835, others think it could have been 1847 on the ship Covenanter.  There was an infant Patrick who died on the latter crossing.  One of the big mysteries, obviously.

In Canada, Patrick and Suzanne had 6 more children: Frederick Joseph, James, Ann, Hugh, William, and Mary Jane.

We have documentation of his residence in the 1871 Canadian Census Index for Ontario: "Patrick Duggan, age 50, farmer, born in Ireland, in King Township, York County, Ontario, Canada."

Much of this information is sketchy and not to be relied upon as we don't want to rule out any possibilities.  For example that 1832 estimated marriage date would have him marrying at age 16!  But maybe what we list as "undocumented family lore" will be helpful in some way.

    With most sincere regards,

    Diane Duggan Bowers

  • hi,

re: eventually ending up in Canada

    Where abouts in Canada ??

re: In Canada, Patrick and Suzanne had 6 more children: Frederick Joseph, James, Ann, Hugh, William, and Mary Jane.

Do you know when and where they they were born ??

There are a few DUGGANs in the 1861 Census.

    https://familysearch.org/search/record/results#count=20&query=%2Bsurname%3Aduggan~%20%2Bresidence_place%3Acanada~%20%2Bresidence_year%3A1861-1871~%20%2Bfather_givenname%3Apatrick~%20%2Bmother_givenname%3Asusan~%20%2Bmother_surname%3Afawcett~

There is a mailing list for people researching Fermanagh family, I have posted a message there to see if anyone is researching a DUGGAN family, i will let you know if I get a response.

  • Hi, I'm Michael Duggan from North Bay, Ontario Canada.

Was doing some searches, as I am planning to visit Ireland this year - after 5 generations !

Many of the names you mention are similar to our 'family lore' - but with some interesting differences:

"Andrew Duggan married Ann Green in Letterbreen County, Fermanagh, Ireland.

Their three sons were Patrick, Hugh, and James.

Patrick worked for Reverend Fawcett, on Garden Hill Farm, 5 miles from Enniskillen.

He married Suzanne Fawcett.  When hard times hit the area, he emigrated to Canada (Ontario) in (1843 or 1845?).  Patrick died in 1878."

"They named their son James Duggan, and he was married three times ... "

If you've any more leads, I'd really appreciate it.  Let me know if you'd like any updates from me - I've just gotten started on this.

Patrick was my 3x great grandfather,  This is a summary of what I know.  I do have some more information some where, that includes birth and death dates.... I have to look for them

    Patrick Duggan
Born in 1814 or 1815 in Ireland

    Married Susanne Fawcett in 1837
Came to Canada in the 1840s . He probably came first and then sent for the rest of his family
He was a farmer in York Ontario
    Not sure when he passed

    Suzanne Fawcett
Born in 1823, in County of Fermanagh, Enniskillen Ireland, I would assume Patrick was born there as well.
She met Patrick when he was working for her father at Garden Hill Farm
They had five children, 3 boys and two girls
She married Edward Watkins in after Patricks death 1881

        Hugh Duggan
    Born in 1846 in Canada
Based on 1881 census he was a teacher
    Married Anna McKenna in 1866
Not sure when he died but Anna shows widowed in the1891 census

    Ann McKenna
Born in 1842 Colgan, Adjala, Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada.
    Died in 1899
They had four boys and one daughter
Not much on the daughter Anne, except that she potentially died in 1906

            James Duggan
            Born in 1868 in Canada
            Married Sarah Anne  in 1894
Immigrated to Michigan in 1896-  Marie was the only child at that time.
Died in 1937 in Waterford Michigan, I think he was living with Basil at             the time
Not sure if Helen is actually his child or grandchild

            Sarah Anne McCarty
            Born in 1871 in Canada
Divorced James in 1894 – Drunkenness and Cruelty

If I find it I will post more. I have attached a picture of Patrick and Suzane and Garden hill farm

  • Hi there -

I think this is the same Patrick Duggan, my 3x GG. I only have family lore, here, on Patrick Duggan and Susanne Fawcett:

    - Patrick was son of Andrew (b. 1790) and Anne (Green) Duggan.

    - They had 7 children: Mary Jane, James, Hugh, William, Frederick, Patrick, Anne (Casserly)

    - Born in Ireland, died in Ontario

Mary Jane Duggan was my 2xGG. Born in Ontario and died in North Dakota. She married another Irish man, Joseph Dennis.

If anyone can go further back, beyond Andrew and Anne Duggan in Ireland, I would love to hear more!

    Thank you!
