I am looking for Patrick Farmer and his wife Mary Jane (Hassard, Hazzard, Haggard, Hasford) or something similar sounding. Their children were Joseph, Frank b. 1866, Thomas b. 1868, Mary b. 1870, Patrick Jr b. 1872 and John b. 1880.

The parents, Patrick and Mary Jane both died before 1 Nov 1930 in Ireland, as did the daughter Mary. I do not know if Mary ever married or not. All the sons came to the United States.

The clues we have to locations are Enniskillen, Ely, Lesky Boho. I understand that Enniskillen is a town, but I do not know what Ely and Lesky Boho refer to and therefore I joined this list in hopes someone can help me find them.

Thank you so much!

Margaret

  • Margaret:

The Farmer family lived in Lesky townland in the civil parish of Boho. Below is the 1901 and 1911 census records for the family. It appears that Patrick and Jane died between 1901 and 1911. Also, I've included an 1862 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Boho parish. The name Hassard appears in the listing so I assume that is the surname for Mary Jane.

I found a death index record for a Jane Farmer in the Enniskillen district for 1909. There were two different Patrick Farmer  death index records in Enniskillen between 1901 and 1911. Based on the ages, the 1905 is more likely your Patrick Farmer. You would need to write to the GRO for the death record to confirm. www.groireland.ie

  • Hi,

Boho parish (pronounced Bow as in bow and arrow) was merged with Devenish in terms of C of I. I must confess I have no experience with RC records. Attached is a map I downloaded which is supposed to show the location of graveyards. It suffers greatly because it does not give exact locations. Also you have to appreciate that in times gone past RC may have been buried in C of I churchyards.

The names Farmer and Hassard/Hazard are not those I would immediately assume were RC so there is a possibility that prior generations may be C of I.

Early C of I Boho records were destroyed but a transcript survives in the PRONI for the following.

    Boho,

    Co. Fermanagh

    Baptisms, 1844-77

    Baptisms, 1840-77

    Marriages,1847-70

    Burials, 1840-79

    No mention of RC.

Lesky townland is in the south of the Civil Parish of Boho so I would expect the RC to be Cleenish -  details below -  note, as it states, it does not list and Church records held locally.

Getting one of the childrens birth certificates after 1864 will confirm mother's maiden name. When you order from the GRO remember to quote the year, location  and ref. number.

Given the ages of the couple it is likely they married pre 1864. If so you may be lucky and get a copy of the microfilm from your local LDA centre. However it is quite likely it will be written in latin.
