Hello I am trying to find information on my  Great Grandfather James Boyd he arrived in Middlesbrough England between 1890 and 1900 having come from Ireland his marriage certificate gives his birthplace as Enniskillen. I have checked the records for Enniskillen there was a James Boyd born around 1869 however I cannot connect this birth directly with James Boyd in England. If anyone can give me any source of information that would be very helpful.

Thanks

Alan Boyd

  • Alan, you have to work from the known, I am guessing that you have his marriage cert & does it say who his father is, where did his wife come from? is she from enniskillen also, she may be from the same townland, who was the witness at the marriage, was it family?

I take it you have him in 1901 Census in UK, will you also search & see if he is in 1891 census in UK or Scotland, I have searched the Irish census & there are 8 but none of him aged 32, see below, is his father in it, has he the same name.  Also check the age he has given on all the above & on his death certiicate to see that it is consistant.  What did he work at? if he is a farmer that wont help as he is probably working in industry now.

Get the birth cert for the 1869 James & then you will see if the details match, if you find 2 , a year apart, you may have the situation where one died & the next boy was named the same, that has happened with some in my family & the death certs confirmed the age & informants as the same parent.

As well as the civil certificates also look at the religious certificates, also broaden your search for younger members of the family, I have found that looking for 3rd & 4th cousins provides a lot of information that is surprising, they may have stories / memorial cards/ photos, but non of this will be an instant answer, I have been researching my family tree for many decades & it is a wonderful journey.

Let me know how it works out for you.  Best wishes Carmel O'Callaghan

Thanks very much for your helpful response:

Here is a summary of what I know at the moment:

On the 1901 census James was 32 so I guess he was born in 1869 in Enniskillen he is not in the 1891 census

in 1901 James was married to a lady who passed away and by 1911 he had remarried (My Great Grandmother). James was a publican and had several different public houses in Middlesbrough. I am particularly interested in anything that could place James in the Enniskillen area before 1900 if possible as I would like to trace his mother and father any further help would be appreciated

    Thanks
