    • John McElgunn ( above) had a least 3 sisters, Catherine, Bridget & Eliza - they were all children of Owen McElgunn & Bridgina Maguire of Killesher.

Catherine married Laurence HARTIGAN in 1846. Emmigrated to USA and lived at Swanton, Franklin Co, Vermont in 1850. They moved to Palos, Cook Co, Illinois by 1870 where they lived out their lives and had 9 children.

Bridget & Eliza McELGUNN landed in Quebec, Canada in 1847

A newspaper advertisement for Missing Friends posted in the Boston Pilot in Vol. 2, 1851-1853, page 113 - 20 Sep 1851

Of BRIDGET & ELIZA MCELGUN, daughters of Owen McElgun from the parish Kilisher, co. Fermanagh, Ireland - landed Quebec in 1847. Any information of them will be thankfully received by writing to their sister, CATHERINE MCELGUN, or her husband, LARRY HARTIGAN, St Albans, Vt. (see MCELGUN, BRIDGET & ELIZA, 9/6/51)

Still seeking info about their parents and also any information abour Bridget and Eliza.

    • Great opportunity for world-wide research..  I'm interested to access the McDonald Australia Family Tree;  no reference in this post today.  McDonald in not an uncommon name - so a reference to the Ancestry hosted tree is welcomed.

As McElgun(/an) is not so common, I looked into Kilmainham Pensioners British Army Service Records 1771-1821, where there is record of 1805 attestation by John McElgun at age 18, and discharge after 12 years of service (in 1817). I cannot read attestation place names, but his birth is recorded in or near Enniskillen and he joined the 27th Foot Corp. See extract attached .docx.

NLI Parish records There is also a Funeral of an Owen McElgun on 19 Jan 1873 Parish Killesher, Diocese of Kilmore. No age is given, but his address/location is. Again, unsure of my reading: perhaps Mullanavehy? Funeral record extract also in attached .docx.

I understand that you're looking for the siblings who emigrated, and suggest DNA will help.  Often the ones who emigrated kept in contact or received news/updates from Ireland, such as death of father/grandfather.  If the attached 27th Foot solider, who would have been 86 years old in 1873, is your ancestor Owen/John, these facts can assist tracing the siblings who did not choose Australia.

      Best wishes in your quest.
