  • Hello Janet,

I would suggest that you go to www.rootsireland.ie and imput these names with a wide margin for error on these dates.  From experience it's more than likely that these dates are incorrect.  yes they may be on a tombstone and yes they may have been in the obit, and yes it's possible that they are correct.  But I have found that most people who emigrated didn't have a birth cert or a baptismal cert and hadn't a clue what age they were.  Many people were illiterate and when asked what ages they were in foreign port took a wild stab in the dark.  This has turned out to be the case in so many researches.

If you go to the irish census of 1901 and 1911, you would have expected people to have aged by 10 years.  However when the old age pension was introduced in 1909 people had to go to parish churches to find out what their birth date was.  That is why people who were 65 in 1901 turned out to be 80+ in the 1911 census.

All I'm saying is, keep an open mind.  Nobody celebrated birthdays back then so they never knew what age they were.

The site is free to join and trawl through and you'll only be charged to view the record you want to open.

    Happy hunting,

  • Looking for any information on John and Hester Armstrong. We believe they left Ireland, probably Fermanagh, 1875-85 to settle in Canada. Have searched Griffith's Valuation with no success so far. Any other thoughts on where I might search?
