Hi, I would like to find out more about my great grandfathers's parents and families and their reasons for moving to Lancashire. My great grandfather Patrick Hughes was born in Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh in 1857. His parents I think were John and Elizabeth. He had a brother Francis and a sister Eliza. The family moved I think to Wigan, Lancashire where two more girls were born. Patrick moved to Adelaide South Australia where he married Mary O'Keefe in Jamestown in 1885. Regards Lynne

Lynne,
It’d be worth trying to track down the births of the 2 children in Wigan. Birth registration started in 1837 in England (as opposed to 1864 in Ireland) so those births would give you the mother’s maiden name, if you can’t get it from any other source.
I assume the family were RC. Enniskillen RC baptisms start in 1838 so you could search for Patrick’s baptism and then for his parents marriage if you can get her maiden name. The RC parish records are on-line free on the National Library site:

In the 1871 English census for 13 Union St, Wigan, I see John Hughes, 38 (labourer), Elizabeth 37, Patrick 15, Francis 13, Elizabeth 11, Mary Ann5 & Margaret 2 (last 2 born in Wigan). They also had 3 lodgers named Lynch and O’Hara all born in Ireland. (Could be unconnected but sometimes lodgers can be relations). Judging by the ages and places of birth of the children, the family moved to Lancashire between 1860 and 1866.
I see a Mary A Hughes birth in Wigan in 1866 Vol8c page 53. That could be her. There are 2 possible Mgt Hughes births in Wigan in 1868.
