Hi all
I am searching for Eliza and James Armstrong from Fermanagh, they emigrated to Australia in 1841. Eliza and James had 5 sons all born in Fermanagh, between 1831 and 1840. Robert,James, Thomas and William and ??? (unable to read his name) Eliza's father was Robert Davis he is listed on Eliza's headstone "Wife of James Armstrong of Redfern, Sydney. Daughter of Robert Davis near Killeshandra Co Caven Ireland."
So originally Eliza was from somewhere near Killeshandra, and whether her family moved to Fermanagh I am unsure or if it was just Eliza.
James was 33 and Eliza 36 when they left Ireland in 1841. I have obtained these records from their travel documents to Australia. They travelled on the Helen and arrived on the 21 July 1841. So I know my facts are correct for them I would love to be able to link back further in the Armstrong/Davis Family. I Know it is like looking for Smith(so many of them but I have my fingers crossed I may find them).
Regards Jan

Are you still looking for information on James & Eliza? I'm in Australia, my mother has significant information on them in Australia. We are from the Armstrong clan in NSW.
Fifth son is Hugh.
Eliza Davis' mother was Agnes Davis, widowed by the time James and Eliza arrived in 1841.
James was Post Master of Terrara from 19 July 1865. We have copy of his acceptance letter and plenty more from within Australia.
Have you found much from Ireland?
warm regards

Hi Peter
Oh this is wondeful,I had sort of given up on finding much more out about James and Eliza. If you are on ancestry you can have a look at my tree it is Novotny/Rist main details are on there.
I have done a some side exploring in Ireland about the family and found family members and some information.
May I ring you if at all possible?
My great grandfather was Hugh's oldest brother William. The family seemed to have moved all over NSW as they grew up.
William went on to make a pioneers life in Taree becoming a well respected member of the community there. He even named a son Hugh.
I would love to here as much as I can about what you have.
I did get some research done by an historical society in the Young/ Forbes disrict a few years ago, and found out a little more about the family that way. I have Hugh in my tree but I have not really researched him as I was unable to find much information. I have a definate birth but no intermediate history and guessed that he may have died in Wallsend in1893.
Now you will be able to correct me on this detail. I am happy to share anything I have. Not everything is on Ancestry as it is still a work in progress as things appear.
We are in Queensland but travel regularly to northern NSW.
i look forward to your reply.
Cheers and also warmest regards

For your deeper research, you are likely to fjnd your Armstrongs originated in the borderlands between Scotland and England and left for Ulster in the wake of the union of the kingdoms by James circa 1604. According to Brian Mitchell in his The Surnames of North West Ireland, they settled jn Co Fermanagh. Look into the Reivers and Marches online. My Noble line also traces back in this way. I can't follow my ancestors before 1800, but my yDNA matches point to the Scottish borderlands. I hope you find this helpful. It certainly explained my Scottish ethnicity despite a century of ancestors living in Enniskillen.

Thank you Pat
You are right about the Scots heritage my DNA shows 38% as Scottish with Irish as 34% and so on down the line.I will do as you suggested and have a look at those books.
