Robert Lindsay married Ellen (Elese) Coulter. Both said they were born in Ireland in Canadian census records. I do not know if they were married in Ireland or Canada. Ellen Coulter is rumored to be from Fermanagh County. I do not know where Robert came from. I believe Robert and possibly Ellen located to canada about 1840. Robert had relative named John and William Lindsay. Lindsay is a Scottish clan name. I would very much like to find out where each came from and were born as well a their parents.

If I can be of any help in locating people for you in the USA, please let me know.

Do you know much about their emigration? The dates, the reason why they left, who they may have travelled with?..etc..Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at (e.g. Liverpool, New York, etc.), this could be a good place to find more information. -And perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

You can check for information about the frequency of the name in the mid-19th century and any other variant spellings of the name here: http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/surname/

What religion were your relatives? Most Catholic records are held locally - One site which might be of use is - http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/ - where you can ?browse? an overview of available records per county. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for possible assistance. Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870-are public records. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyed in the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.

  • Can't locate your specfic family. Coulter/Coalter are not uncommon names. Lindsays are in Fermanagh but also in Tyrone. I know a man who may know - very slim chance - of your Lindsays, but definitely knows the history of the family and their Scottish roots.

  • Hi there

I have been researching Lindsays from the Kilskeery/Fermanagh/Tyrone border area.

Here is some info I have:

Three Lindsay brothers came to Bath Maine USA then on to NB in 1818-20
      a..  Alexander Lindsay, b.June 5, 1781 in Fermanagh Co; d. April 4, 1878 in Woodstock, N.B.. Canada; married Elizabeth Hetherington (b 1790 in Ireland; d. Nov.2 1859 in Woodstock, N.B. Canada)

b.. Robert Lindsay, b.1789, Ireland; arrived in N.B. abt 1819-1822

      c.. William Lindsay, b.1799 in Fermanagh(?)Ireland; d. 1840 in Waklefield, N.B.Canada. Married Elizabeth Porter

They were given land grants in N.B. Canada ( have printouts of these) and were listed as Church of Ireland.

I  believe their father's name was Thomas and grandfather may have been James (Earls of Crawford connection from Scotland).

I have a number of other 'pieces' I can send you if you think it's of interest.

I would love to find out if these three brothers had any siblings left behind in Ireland. I'd also like to determine their mother's name.

    Happy researching

    Sally (Lindsay) Crawford

  • My husband was a descendant of John Lindsay who was born in Irleland and married Elizabeth Coulter, both buried in St. Thomas, Ontario. Ellen Coulter (married Robert Lindsay) and Elizabeth Coulter were half sisters, both born in Ireland. I beileve (but cannot prove) that Elizabeth may be related to Mary Ann Coulter (borh 1788 in Pettigoe) who married James Mills at Templecarn. There were also 2 Lindsay sisters - Elizabeth who married John Baxter and Jane who married Noble Preston. I don't have any information on William Lindsay (the 5th sibling). I don't have any information on the parents of this family.
