Mary Dolan is my great great grandmother.  Her parents were Hugh and Margaret Dolan.  Records say she was from Roscommon, County Fermanagh in Ireland.  She was born in about 1818 and came to America in the early 1830's.  She located in Massachusetts and in 1845 was married to Patrick King from County Galway.  They lived for awhile in Pennsylvania and then moved west to the town of Rantoul in Calumet County in the state of Wisconsin.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

  • My second great grandmother Susan Nolan(maiden name: Dolan) was married to my second great grandfather Patrick Nolan in Blacklion, Killinagh in county Cavan in Ireland.  Susan Dolan was born in county Cavan in 1869 or 1870, if her parents orginally came from county Fermanagh and going back to the early 1800's then it would be interesting to see a family tree connection between your Mary Dolan and my Susan Dolan even though they would be generations apart. If my Dolan side does trace back through Fermanagh it would also interesting to know that my third great grandfather Peter Nolan was born in county Fermanagh in Ireland around 1828 or 1830. Im also trying to find more about my Irish family tree roots through ancestry.com and its not easy even though the trial membership helped alittle bit. Since your great grandmother was born in 1818 then you might want to check out http://www.censusfinder.com/ireland.htm and http://www.findagrave.com/

  • Are you sure she was from Fermanagh rather the Co Roscommon? There is no Roscommon townland in Fermanagh. There are plenty that begin with Ros. What is the source of the information?

  • Francis, thanks so much for the censusfinder site! I don't think that I ever knew that was available and what a treasure trove it contains.

    every good wish,

  • Great question Bob!  I had always thought Mary Dolan was from Co Roscommon...in fact, that is what is listed in her obituary.  I started connecting with other people researching Mary Dolan on Ancestry.com and where someone had added Fermanagh to her birthplace.  I guess I thought that person knew more about her than I did.  Given your comment and the location stated in her obit I'm going to follow the Co Roscommon lead.  Thank you!

  • Thank you for listing the censusfinder and findagrave sites Francis!  I am storing them away for future use.  I have found the names of Mary Dolan's parents which are Hugh and Margaret Dolan.  They are listed on Mary's death certificate.  However, from Bob's post here I think they are actually from Co Roscommon.  I'm not sure of Mary Dolan's birthdate...it could be closer to 1828.  I am trying to find the parish and other more specific information but haven't been able to find documentation connecting Mary and her parents on FamilySearch or Ancestry yet.  Good luck with your research.  Maybe we will find a connection in the future!
