hi,

I am looking for descendents of Delia ROCHE b. 25 DEC 1889 in Feagh, Moyne, Galway.

She emigrated to New York arriving at Ellis Island on 18 APR 1909.

She gave her last place of residence as Ballyglunin, which is where the local Post Office is located.

She MAY have married a Timothy O'LEARY in 1916 in New York but I can't be certain.

Her father was Brian ROCHE, and her mother Kate QUINN.

Regards,

SEAN

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I had a quick look on www.rootsireland.ie for a Brian Roche in Co. Galway in 1880. There is a civil marriage record and if it is the correct one you will be able to find out Delia?s grandparents names and the townland in which they lived. According to this subscription site there is also a church baptism record for a Bridget Roche in 1888. There does not seem to be a record of any other Roche children, besides Bridget, though you may know differently.

Once you have ascertained if these are correct (assuming you don?t have this information already) you can use the townland details to search the Tithe Applotment and Griffith?s Valuation records.

Even though these sources only record the head of the household, the information is very important and can be valuable:

    Tithe Applotment Books (1823-1837): http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp

    Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864): http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

Having secured the information on Delia?s ancestors you can begin to trace any remaining descendants. One way to do this is to track the holders of the land from the time of Griffith?s Valuation to the 1970s, 1980s and later using the Cancelled Books in the Valuation Office in Dublin. I have included a link below giving details about the Cancelled Books. As far as I am aware they are not available in colour online just yet:

    http://irish-genealogy-news.blogspot.ie/2014/01/valuation-office-trials…

You can contact the Valuation Office here:

    http://www.valoff.ie/en/Archives_Genealogy_Public_Office/

Let me know how you progress

    Best wishes

  • hi Clare,

Thank you for your input which is much appreciated.

What I am after is what happened to Delia after she emigrated to new York.

Her siblings Mary, Martin, and Patrick also emigrated between 1903-1909, but I have no idea what became  of them.

I have researched the family in Ireland and know the identity of their parents, grandparents, and g-grandparents.

I was hoping someone related to the US connection would read this post.

    Regards,

    SEAN

  • hi Clare,

I have seached familysearch and found what COULD be the 2 sisters working together in 1910...

Servant     Dealia Roach     F     20     Ireland
Servant     Mary Roach     F     25     Ireland
    https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M59Q-R5J

Marys age and year of immigration tie in, but Delias immigration year says 1900 not 1909.

I searched NY marriage records and came up with 2 possibilities...
    http://stevemorse.org/vital/nymarriagesresults.html?last=roche&first=de…

It appears there were 2 cousins from neighbouring farms BOTH named Delia that emigrated to NY, one in 1909 and one in 1915.

That is all I have I am afraid.

  • Dear Sean

Some other sources you could have a look at include:

    Ellis Islandhttp://www.ellisisland.org/search/passSearch.asp

    Castlegardenhttp://www.castlegarden.org/

    US National Archives/Immigration info: http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

The Boston Pilot: From October 1831 through October 1921, the Boston Pilot newspaper printed a ?Missing Friends? column with advertisements from people looking for ?lost? friends and relatives who had emigrated from Ireland to the United States. This extraordinary collection of 40,743 records is available here as a searchable online database, which contains a text record for each ad that appeared in the Pilothttp://infowanted.bc.edu/

  • hi Clare,

I checked the immigration record at Ellis Island, and Delia was going to join her sister Mary living at 72 West 85th St.

That is the same address the sisters were living at in 1910.

    https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M59Q-R5J

Then Delia is missing in 1915, and MAY have married in 1916.

  • Hi Sean,

Have you sent for the two marriage records?  Delia's parents' names should be given; place of birth is frequently given as just Ireland which isn't a help.  It takes a while, but it's free.

    https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Photoduplication_Services

Have you checked censuses after those marriage dates to see if any information looks familiar?  Perhaps an address close to addresses you already have for Delia which might indicate that it's the correct Delia.

    Good Luck!

    Regards,

    Helen

  • Hi Sean,

(I had some trouble posting so hopefully this is not a duplicate!)

Have you sent for the two marriage records you mentioned?  They should give Delia's parents' names which, hopefully, would be for your Delia.  The place of birth is usually given as just "Ireland" which isn't helpful.  It takes a while but is free -

    https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Photoduplication_Services

Perhaps the censuses for the two couples after the marriage dates might show something familiar such as the same neighbohorhood for address you already have.  Just something to check out while waiting for the marriage records.

    Good Luck!

    Regards,

    Helen

  • hi Helen,

re: Have you sent for the two marriage records?

No, I have not been able to find marriage records for the 2 Delias on familysearch.

I found them on the Steve Morse website...

    http://stevemorse.org/vital/nymarriagesresults.html?last=roche&first=de…

There are certs I need to order for direct family members first, if I got all the certs for the 1600 people on my tree I would be bankrupt...

I have tried getting certs from the photoduplication service before without success - I think it is because there is a branch about 10 miles away and do not qualify for the email service.

  • hi Clare,

re: Do you have access to Ancestry.com?

I have my family tree on there, but am not a member.

I did have access as I volunteered to do research for "Ireland Reaching Out" for Abbeyknockmoy parish, and a couple of others in Monaghan and Fermanagh.

Unfortunately the membership seems to have expired.
