  • hi,

This looks like Ellen and her family in 1901.........

    living at

    Lindsay's Farm (Abbey East, Galway)

Mother Kate b.1840, siblings William, James, Bridget.

I guess you could check with directory enquiries to see if the family still live there ??

Sorry I don't have a local phone book for the area......

It looks like James inherited the farm and is living there in 1911...........

  • Sean, many thanks for your help. We will pursue finding some family in the area. They may have no interest in genealogy but one can only try. Sharon

  • fyi,

Input from Pete Scherm from the Rootsweb Galway mailing list...........

I'm sure the Newtown you want  is just one mile east of the current St. Bernard's RC church of  Abbeyknockmoy - which is itself one mile east of the village (and postoffice) of Abbey,  and where Knockmoy abbey is located.

Lindsay's Farm is a small townland  lying immediately south of the RC church. All of these places are in  Abbeyknockmoy civil and - apparently - RC parish. Abbey East seems to refer only to  an Electoral Division.

I'm not sure if any of these above locations are  within Abbey East E.D., but the townland of Clonkeen, abutting Newtown to the  east, is shown as being located in "E.D. Abbey East" on my Townland Index  map.

However, none of the nearby surrounding townlands are so-identified.

    'Tis a mystery.

  • hi,

There is an Ellis Island record for an Ellen Gannon dated May 1901, travelling to Cleveland, Ohio to join her sister Nora........

I can't be sure it is the right person - she says her last place of residence is Newport ??

There is a Mrs S. Gross also from Newport travelling to Denver in front of Ellen on the manifest......

Mrs S. Gross is returning to the US with her 2 children - is Ellen related to this family ??
