Hi,  My grandmother was Margaret Mary Mannion from Co. Galway, Ireland.  Her parents were Thomas Mannion and Mary Walsh.  I found Thomas Mannion listed in Griffiths Valuation for Cloughbrack Lower with a Martin Mannion.  I found a marriage record for Thomas Mannion and Mary Walsh in 1876.   I also found Thomas Mannion in the 1901 and 1911 census for Cloughbrack Upper, Cloonbur, Galway.  In the 1901 census Kate Walsh is listed as niece to head of house.  I believe this to be my family.  My grandmother's brothers were Martin, Michael, Thomas and John.  She had sisters Bridget and Barbara and I think two others.

My grandmother immigrated to the US in July 1908 with her cousin Kate. I have purchased the ships manifests for Margaret and Kate from Ellis Island, NY, USA.

I recently found a Bridget Mannion immegration record at Ellis Island web site for Oct. 1908 where she says she was from Moylough and meeting her sister Margaret Mannion in Brooklyn, NY.  Is there anyway I can find out if this Bridget is my grandmother's sister?

Also my two sisters and I are visiting Ireland this Sept. and are planning to visit Co. Galway.  We would like to see where our grandmother was from and also would like to find out if we have any living relatives in the area.

Kindest Regards,

Mary Clifford Cobb

  • hi,

This looks like your family in 1901 in Cloughbrack Upper (Cloonbur, Galway)...
    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Cloonbur/Clough…

Bridget was 14yo at the time...

The Bridget in NY in 1908 was 23yo, so unlikely it is the same person.

This is the family in 1911...
    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Galway/Cloonbur/Cloghb…

There were 9 children, 8 of whom were still living in 1911.

    Martin, Michael, Thomas, John.
    Nora/Honor, Kate, Barbara, Margaret/Mary, Bridget.

Martin does not appear in either Census return.
This is his birth record, he looks like the eldest child...

According to google maps, Moylough is about 50km from Cloughbrack...

I have a cousin in Galway who is involved with tracing families, I have sent him a message and hopefully he can help you.

  • Hello,

I am not sure if you realize what a beautiful area of Ireland your grandmother came from. Cloughbrack Upper is right along the shores of Lough Mask surrounded by mountains.  My aunt was born Mary Joyce in Cloughbrack Upper in 1905.  She married a John Mannion whose family lived down the road from her. I always heard that he was a few years younger than she was.  I believe his father's name was Thomas Mannion.  They lived in Boohaun (near Cloughbrack Upper) and had only one daughter named Mary Ann Mannion who is 67 and lives in Manchester, England.   Jack Mannion died in 1984 and my aunt Mary Mannion died in 1995.  I am not sure if they would be related to your Mannions.  I do know that his family moved to  County Westmeath many years ago, and Jack was the only one who remained in Galway area. My mother is Jack Mannion's sister-in-law and is living in Cleveland, Ohio. I will try to see if she has any info about your Mannion family.  Also, do you know that Rosshill Cemetary in Clonbur has the gravesites on the internet now?  Let me know if I can be of further help to you.

    Sincerely,

    Mary
