My great grandfather, James Rabbitt, born around 1830 had 2 wives, the first was Margaret Dunn, and after her death, Honora or Nora Dillon around 1855, in the parish of Killosolan, County Galway.  I have not been able to access the parish records for Abbeyknockmoy, would appreciate it if someone could check to see if either or both of these marriages are recorded, and if any of the births of James children are recorded.  He emigrated to the US, several of the children from both marriages did as well, mostly to Chicago.  James died in Chicago in 1895.

Thank you,

Gretchen nee Rabbitt Metz

  • Hi Martin:

Thanks for the reply.  The reason for Abbyknockmoy is Griffiths valuation and one of my trips to Ireland.  Griffiths listed Rabbitts in the area, and I also found some Rabbitt graves in the area.  As I stated, I tried to check toe parish records, but every time I went to the church, no one was there.  I tried calling and even sent a letter, no response.  So if you get a chance to check the parish records, would mind checking for  a James Rabbitt, born in 1830, married first to Margaret Dunn and then to Honora Dillon?  Also if you see any reference to the baptism of my grandfather, Thomas Carlyle Rabbitt born 1870 I would really appreciate it.

Good luck with your research.  Are we related?

    Thanks,

    Gretchen Rabbitt Metz

  • Hi Gretchen

Yes there are a number of Rabbits in the records there

    http://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/galway/churches/abbeyknockmoy2.t…

and someof their descendents are still in the area

The Rabbit name can also be found as Conheeny like in this family here : http://www.shamrockfarminn.com/family_history.html

I just a quick search and found a reply to your query which seems to have answered it several years ago :http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/RABBITT/2002-06/1024940223 Did this not work out ?

Dillon is not a name common to our area though Dunn is Dillons can be found in the area that you mentioned originally http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Ahascragh/Ervallagh…

Best of luck but I would suugest that you post on the other parishes boards to get your kith and kin

  • Thank you Martin.  I downloaded the Baptisms from Galway church, parish of Abbeyknockmoy.  Very interesting because so many of the names are the same in my line of Rabbitts, Patrick, Thomas, Bridget, James, Michael, Catherine, Honor, John.  I have tried posting to other parish sites, but no luck with responses.  Also one of my grandfather's sisters married a Thomas Clancey, in Ireland.  They came to the US and settled in Chicago, where he became a policeman.

    Yours,

  • Gretchen,

I am very intrigued to read the above email chain.  My Great Grandmother was Margaret Rabbitt married to Thomas J. Clancy, a police Sargent in the City of Chicago. I've had a difficult time finding informaiton on the Rabbit line. I came across James Rabbitt in my reaseaarch last evening which brought me to your research effort. I would be greatful if you would share any additional information you may have on the Rabbitts.

    Thank you and best regards,

    Patrick
