I have posted before trying to establish the location in Ireland where my Downey family is from.  My 2xgreatgrandparents Thomas Downey and Bridget Tyrell Downey emigrated to Boston in 1847.  They had 3 sons - Michael, James, and Thomas.  I was always told that they were from Longford County, but here is where it gets tricky.  I have found a baptismal record for the oldest son Michael christened on August 18, 1840, christening place Roman Catholic Ahascragh and Killosolan, Galway.  But the second son James was baptized at St. Mel's in County Longford on August 20, 1842.  I can't understand this.  The family emigrated when the third son Thomas was an infant - he was born on Decembe 22, 1846 and they arrived in the United States in the spring of 1847.  I have been unable to find a baptismal record for Thomas.  

I will be visiting Ireland in June.  I plan to visit Ahascragh and Longford, but I am hoping to have determined a connection by that time. 

Thomas' parents were Winifred Dorothy (or Doherty) and James Downey.  Bridget's parents are listed as James Tyrell and Bridget Hurley. 

I appreciate any help, all suggestions!

  • I will ask someone in the area (or close enough to it who have mentioned Downeys, just to be sure they are in the same place and not elsewhere). You could also check out the online phone book and write to any you see there:
