Hi I'm researching Manto surname. Does anyone know where they originated from? I'm led to believe they were Italian. I've found Patrick manto castletaylor born 1867 married to Ellen Mackey. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it as there were few generations in ardrahan.

Annie,
A John Manto was baptised in Ardrahan on January 26th 1846. Parents: Richard Manto and Margaret Nilan. Baptismal Sponsors: Michael Fallon and Mary Kelly.
On the 7th September 1859 a Richard Manto was charged at Ardrahan Petty Sessions with leaving the services of Flan Kilkelly, Rinn on July 7th 1859 without giving notice. He did not appear in court.
A Michael and a Mary Manto are recorded in Claredaly in 1959.
The earliest record I have seen in Ireland is the birth of a Thomas Manto in Dublin in May 1800. His mother is recorded as Catherine Flood.
The name is common in Peru. It may be of Spanish origin?
