I believe my maternal grandfather's family may have come from Athleague. We have a name: John Byrne, born or baptized in 1871. Any help greatly appreciated.

  • Hi David

There is indeeed a baptism record of John Byrne 1871 Roscommon in Athleague Civil Parish on www.rootsireland.ie/

It costs to view the full record but it SHOULD have his parents' names.

Once you find out the parents names and the townland where they lived, you can compare the info to the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Athleague civil parish. There were four Byrne entries. I also checked the 1901 census and there were no Byrnes left in Athleague parish. They had emigrated and/or died off. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/roscommon/athleague.htm
