I am looking for information on my great grandfather, Bernard Joseph Green born in County Roscommon  in the early 1860s.  His father's name was Farrell Green and he was a miller.

  • Hi Joanna

There are 2 baptism records of Bernard Green in the 1860's in Roscommon on www.rootsireland.ie/ 1862 & 67

Neither has father Farrell or is from Athleague however

There is no birth record of Farrell Green either

In Griffiths Valuation (free to search online) there are 12 Greens in Roscommon (1858) but no Farrells

  • Thanks Col.

I am wondering if I have the wrong parish, but as Bernard's marriage certificate showed his father as Farrell, occupation miller, I thought the mill would be in Athleague.  Perhaps Farrell was his second name, and he went by it.  I will keep digging.

  • Hi Jo,

Just saw your post and I may be able to assist.

There are several baptisms recorded in the Roman Catholic parish register for Athleague & Fuerty for this family.  (National Library Ireland P4613) As this is my area of Roscommon I have done a fair amount of research in this parish.  My surname is Farrell so I was intrigued by the Farrell as a first name when it showed up in the register.

The reason it may not have shown up in the rootsireland.ie website is that they are recorded as children of Farrell GRENNAN (and variants) and Ellen Hogan.  Thomas bap 1866, George bap 1866, Cecilia bap 1868, Patrick (Green) bap 1870, Catherine bap 1871, James bap 1873 and Margaret bap 1875.  They are recorded as living in Bridgetown townland, Fuerty Parish except for Cecilia who is listed in Castlecoote.  Bridgetown is a local name and does not show up in official maps that I have seen.

The microfilm of these registers (NLI - P4613) are primarily for Athleague parish.  To the best of my research at the NLI it is only when it gets to 1864 is there a distinct separate book for Fuerty and another for Athleague.  Either there is another register in local custody that was not filmed or it no longer exists for Fuerty in the early years.  Maybe someone else can clarify this.  This is why Bernard Grennan (Green) does not show up in the register. His baptism would have been too early.

All of these children I mention, should have births registers in Civil Registration.  Check Findmypast, or FamilySearch or Ancestry.

Tithe Applotment - National Archives website - www.genealogy.nationalarchives.ie

There is a Farrell Rain listed in Castlecoote (link below) which I find a bit strange given the variants in the surname spelling.  Might be worth keeping a copy for further research. Not a huge number of people had Farrell as a first name.

Griffith's Valuation - I did not find this family in the 1857 Griffith's Valuation but in 1857 Farrell Green (Gennan) would only be starting out in married life and possibly not have the money yet to purchase a mill.  It is also possible he was a mill worker, not owner.  There is a mill at Castlecoote whose history is well documented and at the time of Griffith's Valuation William Jn McLoughlin was renting it from Sir. Charles Henry Coote.   I did not find any Green or variants in the parish of Fuerty.  There is a distinct possibility this family lived elsewhere before moving to Castlecoote.  There appears to be a lot of moving around after the famine as so many people had died or emigrated that there were a large number of tenancies available.  How people acquired them is a whole other story.

1901 Census - Farrell Greene is still living and is recorded in the townland of Cooly, Fuerty Parish (see link below).  Cooly townland is just across the river Suck from Castlecoote townland.

Hope this helps.  If you want to contact me I can send you the extractions of the baptisms as an Excel file if you wish.

    Good luck

  • Hi Nufarr,

Thank you so much for your info.

Going through familysearch and Ancestry, I found all the children you listed except Cecilia (1868) and Catherine (1871).  I did, however, find a Sarah born on 10 May, 1868.  Would Cecilia and Sarah be the same child?  I could not find Catherine, but have two Margarets - one born 6 Sept 1871 (same year as your Catherine), as well as the Margaret you have in 1875.  I also found Michael, born 29 Oct, 1879 in Cooley, Fuerty.  Do you know anything about him?

I would really appreciate the extractions of the baptisms.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Jo

Just , thought I would reply, Farrell Green  lived  at what was then called Bridgetown , Fuerty, (located  st the newly constructed Bridge that accesses  Castlecoote house, what is  all important - there are two families living in the  parish of fuerty who are direct decendants of the Greens, -

one at Buckfield and the other at Clooneen Athleague.
