Hi, I am looking fro my gr gr grandmother Brigid Mulvee. James Mulvee and Winifred Moran were her parents. I believe James was a farmer in Roscommon and died just before 1857. Brigid went to England with her sisters Margaret, Catherine and her mother Winifred and her brother Matthew. I think another brother James stayed in Roscommon. Can anyone assist me in finding church or cemetery records for James Mulvee. Thanks.

  • Hi,

James Mulvee and Winnifred Moran did indeed come from the R.C. parish of Athleague & Fuerty. The registers of this parish are available at the National Library of Ireland (P4613).  Check the catalogue or Tracing Your Irish Ancestors by John Grenham for the exact dates available.

There are several different spellings of the Mulvee name in the register including Mulvy, Mulvee, Mulvey. Also very difficult to distinguish between Mulvy and Mulry and Mulrey of which there were several families. Interestingly Peter Mulvee married a Catherine Moran  6 Feb 1826 (Wit; Bernard Moran and Daniel Moran) and they also had a slew of children.

James and Winny's children that I could find -

John Mullin?? bap 19 Jul 1836 of James Mullin ?? & Winiford - Sps John Moran only

Matthew Mulvy bap 20 Dec 1837 Sps James Feeny & Catherine Torpy

Catherine bap 28 Jul 1840 Sps. Dan Moran & Biddy Mullin

James Mulvey bap 13 Jan 1846 Sps Pat Carney & Mary Egan and

Bridget Mulvey bap 9 Feb 1852 Sps Bartley Naughton and Anne Sally (Scally?)

    Hope this helps.

    Regards

    Nuala

  • Hi Nuala,

Wow this is excellent! I live in Canada and do not get to Ireland too often. Do you know how I can access the Library of Ireland? I will try John Grenham site to see if that works for me. The Irish penmenship was truly atrocious! I pay for the ancestry world  site and also find my past. I may now be able to find something with these different spellings. Thank you so much for taking the time to find this for me. Do you know what cemetery they may be buried in? I have access to Find a Grave site and may get lucky.

  • Good morning Irishdescent.

I too live in Canada and very, very rarely have I come accross anyone from the Roman Caatholic parish of Athleague & Fuerty. I grew up there and have been researching my family since I came to Canada in 1972.  If you wish to email me privately I will share some info on the parish and how you might be able to further your research.  Beware, the Mulvee name is quite common so you are going to have to sort out the different branches.  Do you know which Townland your family came from?

What struck me as a bit strange was the length of time between the baptisms of the children of James Mulvee & Winny Moran.

Its also very important to cite your sources - sorry I forgot to add that to the baptism lists.

Source: Roman Catholic Church, Parish Registers, Athleague & Fuerty, Roscommon & Galway, Diocese Elphin 1808 - 1880, National Library of Ireland (NLI), Kildare Street, Dublin, P4613.

Check the NLI catalogue online or Tracing Your Irish Ancestors by John Grenham for the exact dates available on this microfilm.  Unfortunately, this is not one that was filmed by the Gen. Soc. of Utah, so not available at our Family History Centres.

There are two cemeteries - Athleague and Fuerty.  The old cemetery in Athleague is in the village over the river beside the former Church of Ireland.  The one is Fuerty is in Creemully townland and is ancient although still in use.  Neither are on Find-a-grave. I do not know of any records of death for 1857.  How do you know James died then?

Email me and we can work on this.   nufarr at yahoo dot com

    Good luck

    Nuala
