I have recently discovered that my GG Grandfather Patrick Menton c1834 from Gorey Wexford possibly came from Galway as his brother Peter c1809 who died in 1881 in Gorey mentioned a brother Thomas he had in Woodlawn at that time.

The Mentons were farmers and herders and are scattered all across Ireland but I am trying to prove the Galway connection.

Searching the church registry at Aughrim I found about 30 Menton records with name variations such as Mentane/Mintaine/Mintane/Manton/Minton and at Cappataggle church I found about 30 more. Ballymacward and Kiltullagh there were some more also.

I am only just beginning to research Galway as I have practically exhausted all searches in Wexford.

Even up to 1901 and 1911 censuses and  up to 1920s I have found records for Mentons near the Woodlawn area.

I need help if any is available to trace Thomas and find out if all family members were born in Galway.

I also lost track of Patrick after his brother Peter died in 1881 and Patricks wife died in 1900 in Wicklow as a widow so Patrick died somewhere in between Nov 1891 when he was still alive on son Thomas marriage cert  and Aoril 1900 when his wifes death was registered in Rathdrum Wicklow.

All help or advice greatly appreciated.

I know one family descended from Thomas b1870 and Catherine Culkeen. Thomas was the the son of Connor (from the marriage record 1894)

    Thomas and Kate Culkeen's marriage

There is evidence that the name was in Galway at least from the early 1800s as parish records in Cappataggle have a Mary Mentane in 1808

    It is an unusual name

I will be in that area over next few weeks doing Family History projects in 2 local schools so I'll see if there is any local knowledge that perhaps confirms the Wexford  connection

  • Thanks very much for your interest and willingness to help Martin

I have searched a few Galway Parishes near Woodlawn over the past 10 days or so but I somehow missed the 1808 Cappataggle one you mention.

I already have filed the Thomas Mentane and Kate Kulkeen records I found and below is a list of Mentons with various variations in surnames that I have found and filed for reference so far.

I still have a long way to go to piece this all together but am optimistic as I was told of the Galway connection years ago but had no starting point for searches until I found out about Woodlawn.

I have tried to attach a crude map of East Galway area where I have found Menton family connections and I feel as there are so many all within a relatively small area that there is a family connection somewhere but for some reason despite it not being too large it will not upload.

Basically its an area from Loughrea to the same distance north of M^ and about 1/4 way from Ballinasloe to Athenry and about 1/4 way from Athenry to Ballinasloe.

I hope you can visualize the circle I drew around that area.

It is the strongest concentration of Mentons anywhere in Ireland that I found that could be family connections.

  • Martin can I just add that the Thomas Menton I am looking for was born c1820 I am guesseing and his father was John.

He had at least 2 brothers Patrick c1834 who was married as a widower to Anne Murphy in 1867 in Gorey Wexford but I dont know when he died but it was definitely between 1881-1900 when his wife Anne died in Rathdrum Wicklow.

Peter c1809-1881 who had 2 Gorey marriages I know of and was also married before at least once. 1850 to Mary Scully and 1877 to Elizabeth Betty Byrne.

All marriage records for Patrick and Peter show father as John.

I am hoping they were all born in Galway/Roscommon area but I havent found any records with a John as father with relevent ages for these 2 brothers.

I am looking forward to what you might find out when you visit Galway.

  • One last though Martin so you have most info possible.

Cecilia Manton Woodlawn Galway 1917 calender of wills-possibly family of Thomas who was Peter Mentans brother mentioned in Peters will as living at Woodlawn in 1881.
Also Cecilia Manton death cert Clooncah Woodlawn Galway 1917 aged 82_possibly family of Thomas who was Peter Mentans brother and she could be Thomas widow or daughter in law:

  • Hi Denis,

I live in the States and am a Menton by birth.  My ancestor Patrick Menton was the first of our name to come here (Easton Massachusetts) and according to his naturalization papers, was born in 1827 in Co Galway.  His dad was called Denis Menton and was a farmer I believe.  I've been finding it difficult to research my ancestry in Ireland because of my unfamiliarity with baronies and parishes etc which we don't use here.  Also, sometimes things are in Gaelic and sometimes English.  Anyhow, Patrick has a brother John Menton and his mum was Julia (I think).  Any of this sound familiar to you?  We're coming to Ireland for the first time in May to hopefully visit the places my family are from.

  • Sorry to disappoint you but my Patricks father was John and not Denis but there is a very  high probability they are all related somehow as Denis and Jofn and Patrick, Thomas, Stephen, Peter, Mary, Anne, Bridget and Jane are allo common names in Menton family for many generations
