Hello Carol,
If you do a Google search for ?GALWAY EMIGRANT INDEX 1828 ? 1866?, you will find your Abberton and Hickey ancestors listed under a few different years between 1852 and 1860. Names of parents, siblings, townlands from where they originated etc are provided. Also the date of departure from Ireland and the particular ships name that they sailed on. You may already have all of this information, if not, it is a real gem. I am looking forward to introducing you to your ancestoral home place.
Regards,

Hi Carol,
Patrick Abberton and Ellen Hickey are my great great grandparents. They migrated to Australia with six of their children on the Rajahgopaul, reaching Brisbane, on September 12, 1852, where they remained for six months before moving to Sydney. They lived in Sydney for five years, during which time Patrick died. William, 17; Margaret, 14; Mary,14; Elizabeth, 13; Catherine, 12 (my great grandmother) and Patrick, 10, travelled with them on the Rajahgopaul. While they were in Sydney Ellen sponsor her eldest son James to migrate to Australia. She also sponsored her brother William Hickey.
Many members of the family moved to Sandhurst, now Bendigo, in Victoria at the time of the Gold Rush. In 1861 Catherine married my great-grandather, Thomas Conroy, who migrated from Ballynakill, Galway, in 1854.
If you cut and paste the following link into your browser it should take you to my family tree on Ancestry.com. It is a public page I have set up for the use of my extended family. please feel free to examine it.

My cousin and I are also seeking information about the Conroys (or Conrys as they were known in Galway) and understand the links they have with the Abberton's and the Hickeys. I understand my great-grandfather had an uncle, Andrew Hickey, who preceded him to NSW.
Hope this of help

I am looking for the origins of James Hickey (b. abt 1805) and his wife Hannah Touhy, b. by 1822. They immigrated to the U.S. shortly after the birth of their first child, Mary Bell(e) Hickey in 1846. I wonder if they connect to the Hickeys from Rossmore / Rosmore.
Hannah had a younger brother Darby Touhy, age 25 in 1853 of Rossmore, last known residence Cincinnati, Ohio. I do not know what happened to him.
James and his brother William Hickey "had boats on the River Shannon." William apparently stayed in Ireland, as in about 1868 his niece Mary B Hickey paid the fare to bring William's daughter, also named Mary, to the U.S. (Iowa).
I recently have been exploring DNA matches on Ancestry and GEDmatch, and soon will be able to do so via FTDNA. I have several Touhy matches to the area on Lough Derg in Clare and Galway, and several more for which the DNA suggests a strong match but we cannot find surnames in common. I have yet to find a match with known Hickey ancestry.
Thanks,
Julie
