Hi,  my ancestor John Lynch lived in Caherhugh in 1814.  His daughter Anna married a MacDonnell in Westport. Anna's grandfather may have been a Thomas Burke.

I don't know if there were any more of this family in the Belclare area.  Any advice about researching more about this family?

Thanks, Ina

  • Hi Ina

There are no Lynch or Burke families listed on the 1901 census in Caherhugh which isn't to say they don't exist, they may have moved for some reason out of Caherhugh in to a neighbouring townland as some families did during and after the 1847 famine.

The is no graveyard transcription work available on the Galway County Council website for Belclare so you can't check if there are any family names there unless some helpful soul here can tell you if there are any graves with those names in the area?

To make a general observation you could find out from looking at the ordnance survey map what the neighbouring townlands to Caherhugh are called and do a search of the 1901 and 1911 Census to see what Lynch or Burke families are listed in those areas. You won't be able to confirm if they are connected to your ancestors and Lynch and Burke are quite common surnames but it would give some indication as to whether the names are still in the Parish/general area up to 1911 (at least within the geographical area of Belclare).
