I am searching for my g/g grandparents from this parrish around the 1850's date. I connected several years ago but haven't been back to this site for 18 months or so, I do have confirmation of the baptism of their first son Patrick on 2 Aug. 1852. They had a daughter Anna E. Fleming born on 11 Nov. 1850 and then 5 more children born after 1856 in the USA. I don't know when they immigrated exactly, family lore suggested a child born in passage, next living child was James H. Fleming born 1856 in virginia (now West Virginia). The greatest discovery was I found their grave site with a well preserved headstone within 10 miles of my home. (Fairmont West Virginia) I did connect with someone on Ireland Reaching out several years ago who mentioned a Martin Fleming searching for a brother in a Newspaper ad, but don't remember the place he mentioned. Their headstone states they were both born in Loughrea, county Galway, and this appears reasonably close to this parrish. They were RC and are buried in a RC cemetery.

Thank You

James D. Fleming

  • James:

Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!

The baptismal records for this parish start in 1831 http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0329   so it would appear that records would not be available for Martin and Mary other than their marriage record. There is the possibility that they were married or baptized in another parish.

You can go on the message board and search for all prior messages involving the surname Fleming. You would likely find the message from several years ago.

  • Thanks Roger, you have been very helpful over the years. I did go back and find the previos messages.  I've concluded that Martin Fleming had a sister Margaret married to a Patrick Monahan. They had a child Sarah born in Ireland per 1860 US census. I believe there was another sister Brigette or Brigida(from Carabane baptism records) and brother Peter Fleming who went missing in USA in December of 1854. It appears that the children of my Martin and Mary Fleming were baptised in Carraban, I might try to find marrige records for loughrea as this is what the RC family bible and their headstone lists as birth place. It would be nice to get back one more generation of Flemings, but I am happy with narrowing down their origins.

     Again thank you very much.

  • Hi James,

I believe we replied last time. The Flemings were based at Cloonoo-Knockauncoura townlands in Kilconickny Civil Parish (modern Clostoken-Kilconierin parish aka Carrabane). The ad referred to saw a search for Peter Fleming ‘parish of Caraban’ in 1870 by Martin Fleming of Barrackville, Marion County, West Virginia. A separate ad searching for Peter ‘native of Knuckawncoura, parish of Carabane’ in 1875 was placed by his sister Margaret Fleming, Waltham, Mass. You’ll see the family in the both the Tithe and Griffith in Cloonoo and Knockauncoura townlands. In addition, a James Fleming, who died 8 August 1897 aged 84, is buried in Kilconierin. His wife Margaret, who died in 1906, is also buried there.

    Good luck with your search,

    Steve.

  • Thank you Steve

I have narrowed my search for immigration to the period after the baptism of son Patrick in Aug 1852,  and Martin Fleming searching for his brother, last seen in Barrackville (W.V, USA) in Dec of 1854. I haven't had any luck with passenger lists, but will keep searching. I've had some success tracing later family movements. most of Martin and Mary Flemings family remained in what is now West Virginia. Sadly it seems only 2 of their 7 children ever married, as 5 of the 7 are buried on the same plot as the parents.  Again thanks for your input. Jim Fleming.

  •  I would like to find any living Flemings in the Clostoken-kilconierin area. I have traced my paternal family to this area in 1852-1854 time frame. It appears that at least part of this family immigrated to the USA in about 1854. My g/g grandfather was Martin Fleming, married to Mary Haverty around 1848. His sister Margaret Fleming was married to a Patrick Monahan/Manahan and settled in Waltham Mass. A brother Peter who was lost contact with in 1854 in the US. All three appear to have been from Knockauncoura/Carrabane area.

Martin and Mary Fleming have a tombstone stated both were born and raised in Loughrea, county Galway, but this could have been referenced by their surviving children who erected the stone. My extended family has the RC bible of the eldest son Patrick William Fleming, who was my g/grandfather. They also had a son Peter and a son James H. Fleming. I belive the James H was named for Mary's father as the family appeared to follow the naming patterns of that time frame.                                   I would appreciate hearing from any Fleming or Haverty descendants located in this area.

    Thank You, James Fleming
