Hello,

I am looking for any information I can find on the Lally family who lived in Castleblakeney/Mountbellew/Garafine in the 1800s and 1900s.

My great-great-grandfather Patrick Lally was born in Garafine in 1860 and later moved to England but had a number of siblings including Mary, Catherine, Owen and Martin who we think stayed in the local area with the exception of his brother Michael who also moved to England.

Patrick's brother Bernard married Mary Kenny and had at least two children in the early 1900s called Julia and John Joseph Lally.

I believe Patrick's sister Ann (Nancy) married Michael Fahy and had 5 children in the same area.

Patrick Lally's aunt Katherine Lally married a Michael Mannion who died in 1900 aged 103! They had a number of children and Katherine's death was recorded in the Mountbellew Workhouse in 1910. Any information relevant to that would be of huge interest.

If anybody count point me in the right direction of any information you think would be relevant I would be very grateful!

With best wishes,

Megan

  • Thank you, Roger.

We know that Martin Lally was married to a Julia Neal who died in 1900.

Martin Lally's father was called John and we have found a record of his death, reported by his daughter Katherine Mannion, in 1867. I've tried a number of times to find out Martin's mother was but have had no luck! Would you have any suggestion of where I can find any information? I appreciate they would have been married in the early 1800s so may be too early for the records?

From records on the subscription site Roots Ireland, it appears the mother of Patrick Lally was Judith, Julia or Judy Neil/Neal. Martin and Julia married November 4 1859 in Menlough RC church.

We don't the bride's home parish so if it was Mountbellew records dod not start until the late 1840s. Menlough/Killoscobe marriage records go back to 1807 but there is a six year gap between July 1819 and November 1825. The earliest John Lally marriage on Roots Ireland was July 3 1838 at Menlough. Mary Mannion was the spouse.
