Hi there

I am trying to locate ancestors for Thomas Coyne who died in South Shields in 1933.  Thomas married Catherine Burns McKenna in South Shields in 1887.  On their marriage certificate the father of Thomas is given as Michael Coyne from Ireland.  The county of birth for Thomas on the 1921 England Census is Galway.  Previous unproven research undertaken by the grandson of Thomas Coyne would suggest that Michael Coyne was born in Clifden, Galway and his wife was called Mary.  The birth date of Thomas varies on three English Censuses and his death certificate between 1858 and 1865.  Just wondered if anyone out there recognises any connection with the information above

Best

There is a civil birth record (and also a baptismal record in Clifden) for a Thomas Coyne with father Michael Coyne and mother Mary Coyne. Likely Mary was born a Coyne the surname being very common in the area.

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

The family lived in Glenbrickeen townland in Omey civil parish. Omey parish also includes the town of Clifden.

This Thomas Coyne had the following siblings: Margaret 1859 Michael 1861 Bridget 1876  Martin 1882  I note that there is an 11 year gap in births between Thomas and Bridget. Here is the parish register https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1046  You may want to search for other records.

I did not find a marriage record.

This is likely the 1901 census record for the family  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Clifden/Glenbri… One of the daughters mus have married a Ruane. Maybe the 1861 Michael died young and a later child was born and named Michael. John would have been born in the gap period between Thomas and Bridget.

1911 census for John and his family plus Michael his father and likely Mary died.

See ninth record Mary died in 1906   https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu…

  • Hi Roger

Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly!  I couldn't open the document which lists the siblings of Thomas.  Could you kindly send me the URL link again please.  Cheers

What would be helpful is any linkage with anyone in Galway with my Great, Great Grandfather Thomas Coyne (born in Galway between 1858 and 1865) who died in 1933 in South Shields.  His father in law was Andrew McKenna whom I think was born around 1836 in Monaghan, Ireland.  His daughter Catherine Burns Mckenna married Thomas.  Problem I have is that I've nothing to link Thomas with Michael Coyne, his father.

A relative of mine who lives in London has got some results back from an Ancestry DNA test which suggests the birth year of Thomas was 1861 and that his father Michael was born in 1838.  The data goes on to suggest my 4th GG was William Coyne (1827-1904) and that my 5th GG was Martin Joseph Coyne (1810 - 1907).  Whether this is in fact accurate is obviously a point of conjecture but perhaps may throw up something at your end.

Here is the main page for the NLI site  https://registers.nli.ie/   Enter Clifden and the register should come up. You have to manually scroll thru the register and the legibility may not be the best.
