My my great grand father Michael J Costello and his two brothers, John and Thomas, left Cummer parish in the 1870s or 1880s for Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Their parents were William Costello and Mary Nestor.  Their tombstones all state that they were from Cummer Parish near Tuam.

Michael Jerome Costello - Great Grandfather

Born Aug 16th, 1853 or Dec 1849.  Married to Bridget Irene Martin b. march 1861 - not sure if they married there or got married here but her father is listed as john Martin on her death cert

Thomas J. Costello great great Uncle

b. 1847 or 1851

John Joseph Costello  great great Uncle

b. May 1, 1846 quoted in his obit

The only document that I have been able to find so far was a birth record for their sister, Bridget born 1850 and the marriage certificate for William and Mary from May 2, 1840.  Any information on my ancestors would be greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Like you, I can only find the Bridget baptismal record on Roots Ireland. Here is the link to the parish register. Maybe you can scan the register for the yearsrom 1846-1853 and see if you can find other records.

I could not find a marriage record on Roots for a Michael Costello married to a Martin.

Also, the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Cummer parish shows three Costelloe records but no William. Maybe he was deceased or he was not leasing land. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/galway/cummer.htm

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

Let me know if you have any questions.

  • Roger,  thanks so much for looking into this for me.  I really appreciate it and will scan the registers that you sent to me.  All of my ancstors are from the West of Ireland but my costello family is my biggest mystery.  My Great Grandfather's tombstone is inscripted with the words "Cummer parish" but I just cant find much of anything for him, his parents, and siblings.  It's like a missing piece of the puzzle.  I have even visited the Costello Castle ruins over in the Roscommon area.  Thanks again.
