Galway County Council Archives presents an exhibition of documents from its collections illustrating an extraordinary period in Ireland's history, more relevant especially during this year that marks the centenary of the Easter Rising 1916
The exhibition concentrates on the period from 1916 onward covering the time of the War of Independence and Civil War and aims to highlight the riches of the Archives' holdings. It invites and entices readers to explore the collections in more depth, many of which are now free online, so access is quick, easy, free and global. The exhibition is supplemented by images from various other institutions and individuals including the National Archives, Military Archives, Wexford County Archives and others.
When Galway County Council was established in April 1899 it, like other local authorities throughout the county, pledged its support for Home Rule. Between 1899 and 1916 it issues various resulutions reflecting its attitude to ongoing social and political changes. It issues resolutions supporting John Redmond (IPP), land redistribution, the Irish language and the Irish Volunteers. it rejoiced in September 1914 when the Government of Ireland Act was passed by the British Parliament, finally granting Home Rule to the people of Ireland.
