My great-great-great grandfather John Donoghue, was born in 1796 in Clonfert, County Galway.  His religious denomination was Roman Catholic.

He enlisted at Dublin 30 April, 1816 and his regiment, Prince Regent's County of Dublin, came to Canada (date unknown). He acquired a land grant after his discharge, in the county of Leeds (Canada).

In possibly 1821 in Upper Canada (no record found as yet), he married Frances Poole and they had 5 children.

John died May 23, 1866 and is buried in St. Barnaby's Cemetery in Brewers Mills, Ontario.

What I would like to find out is:  who were his parents and did he have any siblings.

Some of this information was taken from a book published in 1987 at Dayton, Ohio by Tom Lubinski (great-great grandson of John Donoghue and Frances Poole - "A Family History of the Leeds County Ontario Residents: John Donoghue (1796-1866) and Frances Poole (1800-1891) and Their Descendents".

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The RC records for Eyrecourt/Clonfert parish do not start until 1829 so no baptismal record is available for John. There are three civil parishes which correspond to the RC parish. I checked the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listings for the three parishes and Clonfert parish had four Donohoe records. Possibly one or more of these records are for relations of John. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/galway/clonfert.htm

You may want to consider autosomal DNA testing which might give you some matches who have Donohoe connections.

  • Thank you for this, Roger.  Would you or another volunteer know how we might make contact with the Donohoe descendants of these Townlands?

  • Kathleen:

I would be very surprised if there were descendants with the surname Donohoe/Donoghue in the area. In the 1901 census for Clonfert parish, there was only one Donoghue-- and Edward who was 55 and unmarried. He lived in Annaghcorrib townland so he was likely a descendant of John or Michael Donohoe from the 1855 Griffiths Valuation survey which I provided above.

  • Thanks Roger.  This is disappointing but we'll keep digging.
