I'm seeking information on the Patrick (Matthew, Michael) SUTTON and Ann nee BURKE SUTTON, who lived in Eyercourt. Ann died before 1847 and Patrick remarried.  His second may have had the name Eliza/Ellen. From the marriage of Patrick (who has also been recorded as Michael and Matthew) and Ann SUTTON were the following known children:

-  Honora - born 6 Jan 1832 Eyrecourt   - emigrated in 1847

-  Anna    - born 12 May 1836 Eyrecourt - emigrated in 1849

- Michael  - born - May 1844 Eyrecourt   - emigrated in 1855

In Griffin's Valuation there is an Ellen SUTTON, free holder of a house and garden in the Eyrecourt Demesne. I haven't been able to find anymore on Ellen. In the 1867 Ellen's name is crossed out and replaced by a Mary Madden.

The immigrant children of Patrick and Ann (Burke) SUTTON had an aunt and uncle - Biddy and Lawrence LYONS awaiting them in America. Biddy's maiden name was most likely SUTTON or BURKE.

Would like to hear from anyone who might be able to assist my search or is otherwise interested in Eyrecourt genealogy and history.

Jim

  • Hi Jim

In terms of tracing forward the family on the plot you could try to access the Valuation records. They are not online yet for Galway but if you wanted to ask at the Valuation Office they may have some suggestions:

    http://www.valoff.ie/en/Archives_Genealogy_Public_Office/

You can read more about the process here:

I have asked a local person if they know anymore and will let you know

These are the only Sutton family in the 1901 Census

  • Clare,  Thank you for your reply and advice, which I have attempted to take.  Now my new questions are in regards to possible relatives.  I am hoping to find what happened to the four daughters of Patrick and Mary SUTTON of Marble Hill, Cloghoola/Cloghooley, Galway.

    - Mary Anne Sutton - born circa 1892 in Birr, Leitrim

    - Rose Ellen Sutton - born 1894 Marble Head, Galway (Cloghooley/Cloghoola)

    - Bridget Julia - born 1895 Marble Head, Galway (Cloghooley/Cloghoola)

    - Alice K. - born about 1898 Marble Head, Galway (Cloghooley/Cloghoola)

Naturally, they are hard to track because in marriage their names would have changed.

  • Hi Jim

In relation to the above, have you tried to see if there are death records available on rootsirelnad.ie or any reference to the family in the Newspaper Archives? You may also be able to see them on the 1911  Census and from their presence/absence make some judgments

    Best wishes
