My great-great grandfather in March 1856, at the Easter vestry held in Gort church on Monday, the Dean of Kilmacdauagh in the chair, Samuel Ellis, Esq. Garryland, and Festus Kelly, Esq. of Gort, were elected church wardens for the ensuing year. In addition, Samuel Ellis is shown in Griffith's valuation as a tenant in Tirneevin and Garryland.  Would love to be able to find exact locations in Ireland today as we plan on visiting in June 2017.    I believe the Gort church is now the library, and not quite certain how to locate on a map his tenancy in the two locations on Griffiths.  I think I have a general sense.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Patty-

I'll let the experts weigh in, but I think if you can find the record in Griffiths there is an option to view a map. The map should have an option for overlay of the old and a more recent map. I'm on an iPad now so I can't test it out but am relying on memory. My family were tenants right next to Garryland in Faunin. A few of the children listed their birthplace as Garryland so perhaps at one time my family was there as well. I believe Garryland is now part of Coole Park.

    Good luck!

  • Patty, you might also think of getting your DNA tested. My grgrgrandfather lived in Tirnevin just before Griffith's, and in such rural areas families were often related. So far I match at least one other person with Tirnevin ancestry.

Alison:  I have done the map overlay so I am fairly certain the location.  Trying to find if there are streets the run past is a little confusing.  I have time to figure it out.

Diane: I think I will have my DNA tested.

Can anyone confirm that Gort church is now used as the library?

  • de Lourdes:

Gerry and I have been in touch.  He shared with me the Taylor familly history, too.  His wife is my 3rd cousin and he was able to confirm that my great-great grandparents are buried in Killinane Graveyard.  We will be visiting next June and plan to spend some time with Gerry and the Taylor clan.  Thank you for your response.

  • By June the Weigh House in Gort will be open as our Tourist Office. Drop in there and you might get some information. The old Protestant Church is now the Gort Library.
