Good evening all. I am new to this group so please bear with me.

I am looking for relatives of the Martyn family who originated from Ballynabucky and Ballynastaig. My paternal grandmother is Bridget Meehan born 1900, nee Martyn and she married my paternal grandfather, Patrick Meehan who lived in Caranavoodaun, sometime between 1918 - 1922 but I haven't been able to find a marriage certificate. She was the youngest child and only daughter of Michael Martyn and Mary Martyn (nee Harte who came from Glennascaul). Some of the records I have found change the spelling of Martyn to Martin and I believe that Michaels father was James Martyn although Griffiths spelt it as James Martin.

She had 5 brothers and I am struggling to find information for them. What I have so far is:-

(1) Michael Martyn, born in 1887 and married Margaret O'Neil possibly in 1928. They lived in Ballynastaig and there children I believe were, Paddy (Patrick) Joe Martyn born in 1929 and who may have passed away in 2007,Mary T Martyn, born in 1930 and Michael Martyn born in 1935 .

(2) James Martyn, born in 1889 and lived in Ballynabucky. He may have married a Winifred and died in 1963 but I haven't been able to confirm this.

(3) Thomas Martyn, born 1892 but I have no more information

(4) William Martyn, born 1895, may have been known as Willie and was a horse trader / breeder. I believe he did marry and had a son also called William. My dad seems to think that his son William died in either the 1950's or 1960's when he was struck by a vehicle.

(5) John Martyn, born 1898 but I have no more information.

A lot of my information I have found on Irish Genealogy and the irish census. My dad is in his 80's now but seems to think that one of the Martyns lived in a house called Crofford. Other than that he struggles with this side of his family and I would love to fill in some of the gaps.

Hope this is OK. Jayne Grindey (nee Meehan)

  • Good evening, thank you for your reply.

The Cornelius Meehan you have found in Dunkellin is my Great Grandfather. Originally from Limerick, he was an ex RIC officer, then shop keeper and finally a farmer. He died in 1901. He married Mary Kilkelly who came from Rinn (which I know can also be spelt Rhynn). I've managed to trace all of their children, one of which was my grandfather Patrick although I never met him as he died before I was born. One of his sons was father John William Meehan., also known as O'Meehan who was involved in the Easter Rising in Kinvara and was living in the parish house with Father Griffin who was called out of the house and murdered.

The Harte family  came from Oranmore but the Martyn's/Martins, Kilkellys and Meehan's pretty much came from the same area.

I'm not sure who the Martyn is who was born in 1962 is.

Thank you so much for looking into this for me. Every time I find something else out and talk to my dad it jogs his memory a bit more and it cheers him up. I really do appreciate your help.

  • Hi there, I just joined this group this evening as I noticed you were searching for some detail of our family. I am Michael Martyn of Roveagh and my grand father would be one of Bridget's brother.... The horse trader. I would know of all the Meehans. Where are you based yourself?

  • Hi Mike,

It’s great to hear from you.

Am I right that William was your grandfather ? My dad remembered a son he thinks was called William, but not much else unfortunately about this branch of his family. I’m not even sure of how many children William had or when he passed away. Good to know that I got the horse breeding right.

Do you you ever get into Ancestry or find my past ?

    Regards, Jayne
