I am researching my 2nd Great Grandparents    Mary Grealish born August 1834 I believe her parents were Patrick Grealish and Mary Quinn.  She was married Michael Price Sept 1856 in Gort Parish (or Kiltartan/ Kilmacduagh).  They had four children Michael Patrick born Augest 1857, Thomas born October 1859, John born July 1861, and Ann born 1864. i do not know where Ann was born,  Michael, Thomas and John were born in Gort (Kiltartan/ Kilmacduagh).

Mary arrived in New York Oct 1866 listed on the ships manifest as wife, with her childen Michael Thomas John and Ann.  John and Ann died in December 1866 of Cholrea.

I do not have much on this Michael Price I have found a Michael Price born 1829 in Kiltartan whom served in the British Army. I haven;t been able to work out getting his service records from the WO to the US, what few records that I do have (disablity discharge) shows activity in Oct 1856, Oct 1857 and and discharge that was finalised Jan. 1862.

I also believe that Mary had a brother John Grealish that married Margaret Rowlin (or Donlon) they had three children *that I know of Francis 1864, Bridget 1869 and Patrick 1865.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you  John Price

  • I am trying to find more about a Thomas Grealish Died 1883 in Gort.  I am trying to establish if this is my g.g.g.great grandfather.  My Thomas was married to a Catherine Murray.  I know he had two children Denis born 1819 Clonfert, Galway and Bridget born C. 1834 both immigrated to Australia in 1854.  and from this family my G. Grandmother Johanna Greelish married a Thomas Ford and came to New Zealand.

I will be in Ireland in August this year and would like to be able if possible find some of my ancestors.

  • Returning to the original thread

Michael Price born 1828   seems to have gotten brought to Petty Sessions Court in Gort as a defendent several times I wonder if there is any insight into this.  (i know he was released from the British Army due to basically insanity)

Also is there any insight into his death?  time and or place..   is there any other information on the grave site paid for by Winifred Price for her mother Ann Price?  any other burial..

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

I believe that I will be visiting Ireland next year and plan on dropping in.

    Yours,   John Price

  • Hi Christine (Apologies John)

The Thomas Grealish death on 23rd Sept. 1883 (aged 84) relates to Colemans Well in the Parish of Kinvara. His son Patrick Grealish was the informant of the death.

  • Thanks John.

I am still looking for my Thomas Grealish (Greelilsh) in Clonfert.  When I was in Ireland I did spend some time in Portumna but still no luck.

  • Hello,

I am the sister of John Price in the earlier threads. My husband and I will be visiting Ireland in June and will be spending a few days in the Galway area including visits to Gort, Kilmacduagh, and Kiltartan.

My brother had inquired about records involving him as a defendant in Petty Sessions Court in Gort. Is there a way for me to find out more information regarding this? It seems from his records with the British Army he was not a stable man. We have no record of him coming to the United States.

Regarding Mary, she had two nephews and a niece who came to New York and one of the nephews even lived with Mary and my great grandfather, Thomas, for some time. These nephews and niece are buried in a plot adjacent to our family plot where Mary and Thomas as well as many other Price family members are interred.

Since we know that Michael Price seems to have lived on Church Street in Gort, we will certainly take in a stroll along that road. I’m sure it looks quite different now than it did in 1856 when Mary Grealish married Michael Price. Would it be possible that the church in which they were married still exists? Also, would I be able to locate the burial site of Anne Price in Kiltartan Cemetery?

Any information or suggestions to places we should be sure to visit would be very much appreciated.

Sister Fahy, if you are still the parish liaison, thank you for all you have already learned for us.

    Sincerely,

    Barbara Price Kornbluth

    Dear Sister,

Thank you for your quick reply. The date we have reserved for visiting Gort is Thursday, June 20th. Thank you for your offer to meet with us. That was very generous of you. I will contact you again when we are closer to the date.

My great grandfather Thomas Price did not return to Ireland. He lived to be 74 years old and my father loved spending time with his grandfather, Thomas, growing up. I only wish I could remember more of his stories and asked more questions.

In regards to Michael's wife, Mary Grealish Price, you stated that she was given money to assist in her emigration. When she arrived in New York she worked for about 5 years as a laundress at a holding area for immigrants who were waiting to be released into the US. Her oldest boys were with her attending school. I wonder if this was for her to pay back what she owed for passage.

Are there Grealish families still in the Gort area?

    Thank you again!

    Best wishes,

    Barbara
