I would be grateful for any help in my quest to find more about my 2x great grandfather James Quinn born in Kilcummin around 1776–8. He served in Canada and later settled in Hampshire, but I have been unable to find any earlier records, I e birth or baptism, or the names of his parents.

    Hi Sheelagh

Your gg grandfathers' name was possibly "McQuinn" a name which is in Oughterard for many years.

The baptismal records for Kilcummin do not begin until 1809, so it is unlikely that any record will be found.

You will need to do some further research in relation to when and where your gg grandfather married and to

    whom.

    Hi McCoy,

Thank you for the McQuinn suggestion.

James married a Mary Ann Holland in Liverpool, England and went on to have a large family in Hampshire. Prior to settling in Hampshire he served in Canada in 1819, but was discharged in 1820 at Leinster, Dublin.

DNA suggests a link with some descendants of Thomas H Quinn  [1854-1915, born Ballinvoker, Donaghpatrick, Galway] who emigrated to USA, T H Quinn's parents were John, 1820, Balinvoker -1874 ,Ohio county, W V, USA] and Nelly Lyons,c 1800, Clonfert Parish, Galway, and John and Nelly had two other offspring, Lawrence Quinn 1817-, and Mary Ann Quinn, born August 1823 Capptagaggle , Clonfert, Galway---it seems she didnt marry and died 1904, in Gort.

Any further suggestions or information would be most helpful, as my cousin C Quinn and I are trying to learn more about the Quinn family history, and James's life appears especially interesting as apart from the army service in Canada he may have alao emigrated to America but returned prior to marrying and settling in Hampshire.

    Many thanks and best wishes,

    Sheelah

    Hi Sheelagh,

Take a look at 1901 and 1911 census for Stephen and James McQuinn - Oughterard  www,nationalarchives.ie/census - Free Site -  and see if there is any similarity in first names with your gg grandfather's family.  Their father was "Stephen McQuinn" who was born c1820. He had died before the 1901 census was taken.
