Hi,

I am searching for any information on Bridget 'Delia' Foley/Folan, she is my wife's 2nd great grandmother.  I do know she married Bartley Norton (Naughton?).  The oly dates i am aware of is that her sone Michel was born around 1866, so she may have been born in the 1830's or 1840's.  Any information would be appreciated.

Regards

Daniel

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

If Bridget was from Spiddal, more likely she was from Moycullen parish and unfortunately they do have a large gap in their baptismal records from March 1823 through 1836. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0633   I did query Roots Ireland and the only Bridget Foley.Folan/Folen baptismal records were in 1820 and 1851 which are outside of the likely year based on your message.  Here also is the parish register for Oughterard/Kilcummin parish http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0627

I did locate a transcription for Michael who was born in 1861. See below. He was baptized in Spiddal and their records start in 1861. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0641

  • Dear Roger,

Thank you so much for pointing me to Michael Naghten.  I have been searching for many years for his birth location.  Recently my wife had a DNA match to someone with the Foley name and we traced other records back to this location.  My wife did not know her her original spelling to be Naghten, she always was told it was Norton.  Now we have another location to visit our next time to Ireland.

    Have a great weekend!!

  • Dear Daniel:

Bartholomew and Bridget 'Delia' Folan's are my 3rd gr-grandparents.  Their son, Michael, married Bridget Donohoe in 1880.  Their daughter, Margaret, went to the States where she married my grandfather, Lawrence (Laurie) Archibald.  They returned to Middle Musquodoboit (Newcomb's Corner) where they had a farm.  Margaret died when my Mum, Helen Archibald Higgins was five years old.  Grandad Laurie remarried  to Jenny Warner Bayers.  They raised Margaret and Laurie's children, the youngest who was 3 mos. old when Margaret passed away.  Like you, we have been searching for Naughton or Norton because that is the name on Margaret's marriage certificate. It was a breakthrough to find Michael's marriage listing Bartholomew and Bridget as his parents.  Let me know if you would like more family info.  Bridget, Michael's wife, died in 1899/1900 age 40.  Michael passed away in 1900 age 40.  The 1901 Census for Kilroe East shows the four girls.. Sarah Head of family 16 yrs., Margaret 14, Julia 12 and Bridget 9.  Sarah married Thomas Concannon in 1903 and they had children, some of whom moved to the States.

  • Hi Wendy, thank you for the reply.

Doesn't look like the same family.  Our Michael Norton came to America in 1881 and settled in the Boston Mass area.  He married Katherine Lydon.  Michael died in Tewksbury MA in 1911.  His death certificate is where I learned about his parents names being Bart and Bridget Foley.  Does this make any connection to the family you are aware of?
