I think I located the civil marriage index record for the marriage of Daniel and Mary. I was unable to locate a 1901 census record for the family. When did they emigrate to the States?

    Dear Mr. McDonnell,

Thank you for looking it up! I would love to have their marriage record. It may give me an idea of where they were born and who their parents were.

Daniel and Mary never did emigrate, so there must also be burial records,  but my grandmother Ellen Mary Driscoll did emigrate. I have found a baptismal record for Ellen and other siblings that record Clydine, Kilcummin, (9 Sept. 1884 for Ellen).  Happily they name both Daniel Driscoll and Mary (Nagle) Driscoll. (Book Number 2; Page 116; Record Identifier KY-RC-BA KY-RC-BA-283746 is Ellen's record from the Irish genealogy.ie web site)  I have also found 1901 census information linking Daniel and Mary to Knockatagglemore (Kilcummin, Kerry) also in 1911 Knockataggle More (Kilcummin, Kerry) under the name ODriscoll.

Ellen Mary Driscoll died in  Worcester Massachusetts, USA 1942, (quite a bit before my time!)  Ellen's daughter, my mother, always identified with her irish citizenship as her parents remained Irish citizens and never became citizens of another nation.  However I cannot locate evidence that they registered her birth with the Irish Consulate in Massachustts. I wouldn't know where to search for that. Unfortunately my mother (born 1925 in Massachusetts) died when I was young, and foolish enough not to ask questions about heritage, but I recall her letter writing and telephone calls to her Aunt Catherine in Clydine, Kilcummin, well into the early 1970's. The Driscolls who emigrated scattered. My family ended up in Venezuela for a period. Now we are in Michigan.

My son, Daniel, 12 years of age,  wonders why we speak Spanish, adopted another culture(s) but have little information about my Irish family. Good questions! It seems impossible to lose track of one's own grandparents!

In any event, I thank you in advance if you can be of assistance in informing me how I might go about obtaining a copy of birth certificate of Ellen Mary Driscoll of Clydine, Kilcummin (Date of Birth 8/Sept/1884, Date of Baptism  9/September/1884). Is the information from the Kilcummin church record sufficient for me to order it from the Civil Registration Office in Dublin?

Any information you may offer on how I might order a copy of marriage certificate of Daniel Driscoll (ODriscoll?) and Mary (Nagle)- date and location of the marriage, etc., would be gratefully received.

    Sincerely,

    Rosemary

  • Rosemary:

To get a copy of a BDM record go to this link

     https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

print out the appropriate form, fill out the form to the best of your ability, make sure you check that you want a copy of the record, add the info from the index record: quarter/year of the event, registration district, volume and page number.

You have to mail the request to the GRO in Co. Roscommon (address is provided with the form copy), howver, you can ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

By the way, I could not locate a civil birth index record for Ellen Driscoll in the Killarney registration district. The only record was in 1899. So I' wondering if Ellen's birth was registered civilly. You can ask the GRO and provide whatever data you have from the baptismal record.

  • Dear Roger,

    Thank you for your help!

You mentioned locating the civil marriage index record for Daniel and Mary (Nagle) Driscoll. I would be grateful if you would send the date and location of the marriage of Daniel Driscoll and Mary and any other information on that record. Does the record reveal the names and places of birth of their parents?

Did you happen to find anything registered about their deaths/burials? According to documents I have, my grandmother visited her mother Mary Driscoll in Kilcummin in 1921, indicated she was still around as of that year.

    Grateful for any information,

    Rosemary

  • Rosemary:

Go back up to my first message which contains the index record for the marriage record. Then follow my instructions in my second message for writing to the GRO.

When the GRO sends you the actual record, it will show the date of marriage (sometime in the 2nd quarter of 1883). The record will show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bridge and groom were living in 1883. (The mothers names are not provided and it will not show the dates of birth of the parents).

I could not find a civil death index record for Daniel but located a possible record for Mary 9see below).

Feel free to ask more questions.

  • Dear Roger,

The civil marriage index record appears empty to me. Could you send me the information you found via email? rweston3@emich.edu

By the way, congratulations on your recent award! You are truly deserving!

  • I am delighted to report that Ireland XO has "reached out" and that I am in contact via email with the family of my grandmother's brother. My grandmother had emigrated from Kilcummin, Co. Kerry prior to 1920.  It is an honor that this has occured at the moment that I have been selected for the 2016  Gaeltacht Award administered by the Fulbright/Ireland-US Commission and sponsored by Ireland's Department of Arts, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht. I will be in Ireland this summer and hope to see relatives and the place where my grandmother was born. A heartfelt THANK YOU to Ireland XO!
