My great great grandparents John Ryan and Sarah Tarpy were married in County Galway in Feb 1824. I have attached the written record of their marriage. The record in question is on the left page and near the top.

I Think that it means that the marriage took place in the townland of Cappataggle, Co Galway. Is that correct?

Is it true that the reference to Cahernagarry in the record tells me that Cahernagarry is the residence of either the bride or the groom?

I looked up what Roman Catholic Churches are in Cappataggle and I found that there was a St Michaels but that church was built in 1897.

Can someone tell me  what Church they may have been married in in 1824?

One of my cousins will be visiting Ireland and would like to visit the church if it is still standing.

Thanks

Marge

The 1837 Lewis Topographical Dictionary for Kilrickill (sp) civil parish indicates that there was a chapel in Kilrickill and another in Killallaghtan (Cappataggle).

I would agree that Cahernagarry was the townland for either the bride or groom. Cahernagarry is closer to Kilreekill so possibly the marriage took place in the chapel of Kilreekill which is the present day Our Lady of Lourdes. I was not able to find a web site for the present day parish which might have shown a history of the parish.

In any event, it is unlikely that the chapel from 1824 whether Kilrickill or Cappataggle is still standing. Possibly ruins exist. The current parochial house for the parish is in Cappataggle.

    I will keep looking.
