  • My ggggrandfather was William Broggy and he was born around 1805.  His native place according to his ship indents was Limerick and he was tried in Limerick in 1828 for stealing a pig and sent to New South Wales.  He later used the name Brophy.

There are not a lot of Broggy families around I believe in the Limerick/Clare area but I have heard of  folk around Meelick and seen posts on various sites

    Broggy/ Bruggy
The name Broggy/ O Broghaidh is one of the oldest & rarest of all Irish names & can be seen in The Book of Armagh on display in Trinity College, Dublin.

I am setting up this web page for Broggys who may be looking to trace their family name.

At present there is only 3 families in Ireland with the name Broggy.
My name is Bernadette Broggy daughter of Noel & Bridget Broggy.

  • In trying to provide a timeline to associate any Broggy [Or surname derivations] with my ggggrandfather William Broggy who was born in 1804/05 and tried in Limerick City in 1828 and sent to N.S.W., I have traced back a Broggy family that has resided in Derrymore for a number of generations and still live there today.

It has taken me back to the 1830's where a Daniel Broggy and Bridget Finucane registerd their first child in 1832.  Registration at Derra.  I believe that their child Matthew, born in 1840, belongs to this family.

As it is difficult getting records back in this period, I am looking for anyone who has a Broggy/Bruggy. Broggie, Brogy or derivation of the surname connection.  I am currently recording as many records as I can and placing them in decades to build some type of association.

Would love to hear from anybody who may wish to help.  Contact thegreyattpg.com.au

    Hello Bernadette!

In 1996 I corresponded with your mother, Bridget, when I first began researching my Rohan/Roughan/Rohen/Rowan family.  It appears in the 1855 Griffiths my gr gr grandparents Michael Rohan and wife Elizabeth Dolan who m. 1830's in the Roman Catholic parish of Parteen  rented a house (property?) from Daniel and Patrick Bruggy.  These men were also baptismal sponsors for two of the Rohan children.  Your mother confirmed your father was related to these Bruggy.  Unfortunately we could not determine if there was a relationship between the Rohan/Bruggy families.  Although there were Dolans listed as witnesses/sponsors in the Parteen church records and I have found Elizabeth's brother Geoffrey to be m. to Anne Tormy in Crookedwood, Taghmon, Co. Westmeath, no Rohnn was listed and I have not been able to determine where Michael Rohan may have been born, his siblings, nor his parents.  The Rohan/Dolan family began immigrating to Chicago mid-1860's with Michael & Elizabeth the last to arrive in 1874.

Thank your for posting here at Ireland Reaching Out.  Maybe my post will be helpful and might even provide clues enabling me to go further with my Rohan & Dolan research.

With best regards to you and your parents,

    Judith Mason

born Chicago, Illinois - living in Portsmouth VA since June 2014

(the Mason/Hayes family were also from Co. Clare, Athlunkard in the R.C. parish of Parteen)

  • Hi Judith.

It is Bridget and Noel Bruggy's family that I have traced back but so far on my steam.

I have been in touch with some of the children who advised me that a family tree had been done and they would send a copy when they could but so far I have not received anything.  I would love to have a copy so I can verify my findings with it.

So I am continuing to collect all the records I can with various derivations of the surname and put them in decades and try and see who was where and in what time period.

I have been able to get back to 1830's with Noel's family line and then seek out records prior to that date.

Any assistance with any records relating to Broggy/Bruggy would be appreciated.

    Merv Webster.

  • We have been making good progress with finding many of the Bruggy/Broggy/Brouggy/Brogie families.  One family stayed in Derrymore and others migrated to Australia and some to America.

For those who might be interested you can email me at thegrey@tpg.com.au to find out more.

We have a page on facebook as well.
