I am trying to find the birth and/or marriage of my g-g-g-grandfather Peter Gilmore, a shepherd.  His wife Margaret and son Patrick (born approx 1835) came to Liverpool around 1847, and in the 1851 Census Margaret described herself as the widow of Peter.

In 1861 Patrick noted his birthplace as Ballygar.

My great-grandparents' generation believed that Patrick was a cousin of Patrick Stephen Gilmore, who emigrated to America and changed his name to Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore.  I am specifically trying to find a connection between Peter Gilmore and Patrick Stephen Gilmore.  I believe that Peter may have been the brother of Patrick Stephen's father.

I have little evidence, but it's possible that Margaret's surname before marriage was Hinds, and I would like to confirm this in her marriage record, if possible.

Many thanks for any assistance.

  • Hi,

Thank you very much for your message.

Catholic records for Killeroran/Killian parish start as early as 1804 so you should be able to find some record of Peter if he was born/married in this parish.

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Galway&CityCounty=East%20Galway&parish=Killian&churchid=545

Most Catholic records are still held locally so it may be an idea to contact the local parish priest for some possible assistance. Here are the contact details:

    BALLYGAR (KILLIAN AND KILLERORAN)

    Very Rev Michael Breslin PP

    Ballygar, Co Galway

    Tel 090 6624637

    Very Rev Thomas Beirne CC

    Newbridge, Ballinasloe, Co Galway

    Tel: 090 6660018

Also, as you can see from the Irish Times link above, the East Galway Family History Centre have copies available. Here is their email if you would like to contact them, however a fee may apply: galwayroots@eircom.net

    Kind regards,
